: Triazoles are five-membered aromatic heterocyclics, which could exist in two isosteric forms (1,2,3-triazoles and 1,2,4-triazoles) presenting huge applications in medicinal, agricultural, supramolecular and materials sciences. The drugs fluconazole, ribavirin, cefatrizine and tazobactam, and the herbicides cafenstrole and metosulam are famous examples of triazoles. The aim of this review is to present the main recent examples of Microwave-Assisted Organic Synthesis (MAOS) applied for the synthesis end functionalization of 1,4- and 1,5-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles, 1,2,4-triazoles, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazoles, 1,2,4-triazol-3-one and 1,2,4-triazol-3-thiol derivatives. Worth of noting, despite some previous reviews about triazole synthesis, none of them focused exclusively on the importance of MAOS technic in the obtention and derivatization of these compounds.

2-Pyridones are important heterocyclic compounds that are widely used in medical chemistry, and their various derivatives have significant biological and medical applications. In this paper, the synthesis of 2-pyridones as well as 2-pyridone based compounds such as 2-quinolones using microwave assisted organic chemistry is reviewed. The review is divided in three parts. In the first part, microwave synthesis of 2-pyridones according to the type of condensation is discussed. In the second part, microwave assisted synthesis of 2-quionolones is listed. At the end of the review several examples of microwave synthesis of other 2-pyridone based compounds (ring fused N-substituted 2-pyridones) are given.

This review deals with the recent advances on the microwave-assisted synthesis of bioactive heterocycles without using any catalyst under various reaction conditions. Synthesis of various biologically promising N-heterocycles, O-heterocycles, S-heterocycles, N as well as O- or S-heterocycles reported so far under catalyst-free microwave-irradiated conditions are discussed in this review.
