The overcrowded molecules 1,1,3,3-tetra-tert-butyldisiloxane-1,3-diol (2) and penta-tertbutyldisiloxanol (4) have been obtained during the attempted synthesis of tri-tert-butylsilanol and di-tert-butylsilanediol by reaction of tri-tert-butylsilane and di-tert-butylchlorosilane, resp., with silver nitrate. Compounds 2 and 4 were also formed either by condensation of two molecules of di-tert-butylsilanediol or by co-condensation of the silanediol with tri-tert-butylsilanol in the presence of jo-toluenesulfonic acid. Reactions of tri-tert-butylsilanol with silicon tetrachloride yielded 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexa-tert-butyl-3,3-dichlorotrisiloxane.

The sterically congested disilanes tBu2XSiSiXMes2 [X = H (1), X = Cl (2)] have been prepared. An X-ray structure analysis of 1 reveals a preference for the anti-conformation in the solid state. Similar results have been obtained by empirical force field calculations and DNMR spectroscopy. Reaction of 2 with an electron rich olefin leads to a chlorine bridged disilanyl radical whereas treatment with alkali metals yields the corresponding disilenyl radical anion, tBu2Si=SiMes2˙̄.

The reaction of 1,1,2,2-tetra-tert-butyl-1,2- dihalodisilanes with alkali metals or metal naphthalenides leads to a complex reaction mixture from which one compound has been identified by its GC/mass spectrum as tetra-tert-butyldisilene (1). The constitution of 1 has been further confirmed by its cycloaddition products with benzil or 1,3-cyclohexadiene, respectively
