A new type of nickel and palladium complexes with non-innocent β-diketiminate ligand having redox active phenol groups, 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((1E,2E)-3-((3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)amino)-2-nitroallylidene)amino)phenol ( L H 3, fully protonated form) have been developed, and the structure, physical properties, and reactivity of their one-electron and two-electron oxidized complexes, [MII(L•2-)] and [MII(L-)]+ ( M = Ni II or Pd II ) have been examined in detail. The two-electron oxidized forms of both complexes, [MII(L-)]+, exhibited hydrogen atom abstraction ability from 1,4-cyclohexadiene (CHD) comparable to its copper analog [ Cu II ( L -)]+ (Dalton Trans. 2013; 42: 2438-2444). The one-electron oxidized form of palladium complex, [ Pd II ( L •2-)], was also found to oxidize CHD, whereas the nickel analog, [ Ni II ( L •2-)], exhibited photo-induced oxidation ability of CHD.

Pervaporation is a membrane technique used to separate azeotropic and close boiling solvents. Heterogenous PVA composite membranes with NaY zeolite supported on polyamide-6 were fabricated and utilized in organic–organic pervaporation. The efficiency of prepared membranes was evaluated in the separation of ethanol/ethyl tert-butyl ether (EtOH/ETBE) using separation factor (β) and the thickness normalized pervaporation separation index (PSIN). Implementation of the fringe projection phase-shifting method allowed to the determined contact angle corrected by roughness. The influence of the presence of water traces in the feed on the overall separation efficiency was also discussed using the enrichment factor for water (EFwater). The incorporation of NaY into PVA matrix increases surface roughness and hydrophilicity of the composite membrane. It was found that membranes selectively transport ethanol from the binary EtOH/ETBE mixture. The values of β (2.3) and PSIN (288 μm g m−2 h−1) for PVA-NaY/PA6 membrane were improved by 143% and 160% in comparison to the values for the pristine PVA/PA6 membrane. It was found that membranes showed EFwater > 1, thus revealing the preferential transport of water molecules across membranes. These results are also significant for the design of membranes for the removal of water excess from the mixtures of organic solvents.

Salen(t-Bu)H2 (N,N'-ethylenebis(3,5-di-tert-butyl(2-hydroxy)benzylidenimine) and its derivatives were used to prepare boron compounds having the formula L(BCl2)2 (L = salen(t-Bu) (1), salpen(t-Bu) (2), salben(t-Bu) (3), salpten(t-Bu) (4), salhen(t-Bu) (5)). These are formed from the reaction of the corresponding L[B(OMe)2]2 with BCl3. In addition to being a new type of boron compound, they are also potential two-point Lewis acids. Indeed, they demonstrate Lewis acidic behavior in the dealkylation of trimethylphosphate. All of the compounds were characterized by mp, elemental analysis, 1H and 11B NMR, IR, MS, and in the case of 2 by X-ray crystallography.Key words: boron, salen, dealkylation.

A new type of synthetic industrial diamond formed by an explosive shock process has been recently developed by the Du Pont Company. This material consists of a mixture of two basically different forms, as shown in Figure 1: relatively flat and compact aggregates of acicular crystallites, and single crystals in the form of irregular polyhedra with straight edges.Figure 2 is a high magnification micrograph typical for the fibrous aggregates; it shows that they are composed of bundles of crystallites 0.05-0.3 μ long and 0.02 μ. wide. The selected area diffraction diagram (insert in Figure 2) consists of a weak polycrystalline ring pattern and a strong texture pattern with arc reflections. The latter results from crystals having preferred orientation, which shows that in a given particle most fibrils have a similar orientation.
