A pair of structurally-similar and stable 8-coordinate high-spin Fe(ii) and Fe(iii) compounds have been obtained. Both compounds exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour.

Applying a novel magnetic director approach, we have realized Cu(ii)(DMF)2Cl2[12-MCFe(III)N(Shi)-4](DMF)4·2DMF as the first heterometallic transition metal 12-MC-4 complex in order to provide this type of compound with a high-spin ground state.

A dinuclear [(H2O)Cu(HLN2O2)Eu(NO3)3] complex exhibits paramagnetic behaviour with S = 1/2 ground state. At low temperature it displays slow magnetic relaxation that is supported by a small external magnetic field.
