The introduction of a chemical additive to supramolecular polymers holds high potential in the development of new structures and functions. In this regard, various donor- and acceptor-based molecules have been applied in the design of these noncovalent polymers. However, the incorporation of boron–nitrogen frustrated Lewis pairs in such architectures is still rare despite their many intriguing properties in catalysis and materials science. The limited choices of suitable boron derivatives represent one of the main limitations for the advancement in this direction. Here, we examine the use of the commercially available tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane with various triphenylamine derivatives to create supramolecular B–N charge transfer systems. Our results highlight the importance of a proper balance between the donor/acceptor strength and the driving force for supramolecular polymerization to achieve stable, long-range ordered B–N systems. Detailed analyses using electron paramagnetic resonance and optical spectroscopy suggest that tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane displays complex behavior with the amide-based triphenylamine supramolecular polymers and may interact in dimers or larger chiral aggregates, depending on the specific structure of the triphenylamines.

ABSTRACTRutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) is used to characterize the stoichiometry of graphite intercalation compounds (GIC). Specific application is made to several stages of different donor and acceptor compounds and to commensurate and incommensurate intercalants. A deviation from the theoretical stoichiometry is measured for most of the compounds using this non-destructive method. Within experimental error, the RBS results agree with those obtained from analysis of the (00ℓ) x-ray diffractograms and weight uptake measurements on the same samples.

: For the first time in the present study, the non-bonded interaction of the Coniine (C8H17N) with carbon monoxide (CO) was investigated by density functional theory (DFT/M062X/6-311+G*) in the gas phase and solvent water. The adsorption of the CO over C8H17N was affected on the electronic properties such as EHOMO, ELUMO, the energy gap between LUMO and HOMO, global hardness. Furthermore, chemical shift tensors and natural charge of the C8H17N and complex C8H17N/CO were determined and discussed. According to the natural bond orbital (NBO) results, the molecule C8H17N and CO play as both electron donor and acceptor at the complex C8H17N/CO in the gas phase and solvent water. On the other hand, the charge transfer is occurred between the bonding, antibonding or nonbonding orbitals in two molecules C8H17N and CO. We have also investigated the charge distribution for the complex C8H17N/CO by molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) calculations using the M062X/6-311+G* level of theory. The electronic spectra of the C8H17N and complex C8H17N/CO were calculated by time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) for investigation of the maximum wavelength value of the C8H17N before and after the non-bonded interaction with the CO in the gas phase and solvent water. Therefore, C8H17N can be used as strong absorbers for air purification and reduce environmental pollution.

The O-H...N and O-H...O hydrogen bonds were investigated in 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (HBQ) and benzo[h]quinoline-2-methylresorcinol complex in vacuo, solvent and crystalline phases. The chosen systems contain analogous donor and acceptor moieties but differently coupled (intra- versus intermolecularly). Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) was employed to shed light onto principle components of interactions responsible for the self-assembly. It was applied to study the dynamics of the hydrogen bonds and vibrational features as well as to provide initial geometries for incorporation of quantum effects and electronic structure studies. The vibrational features were revealed using Fourier transformation of the autocorrelation function of atomic velocity and by inclusion of nuclear quantum effects on the O-H stretching solving vibrational Schrödinger equation a posteriori. The potential of mean force (Pmf) was computed for the whole trajectory to derive the probability density distribution and for the O-H stretching mode from the proton vibrational eigenfunctions and eigenvalues incorporating statistical sampling and nuclear quantum effects. The electronic structure changes of the benzo[h]quinoline-2-methylresorcinol dimer and trimers were studied based on Constrained Density Functional Theory (CDFT) whereas the Electron Localization Function (ELF) method was applied for all systems. It was found that the bridged proton is localized on the donor side in both investigated systems in vacuo. The crystalline phase simulations indicated bridged proton-sharing and transfer events in HBQ. These effects are even more pronounced when nuclear quantization is taken into account, and the quantized Pmf allows the proton to sample the acceptor area more efficiently. The CDFT indicated the charge depletion at the bridged proton for the analyzed dimer and trimers in solvent. The ELF analysis showed the presence of the isolated proton (a signature of the strongest hydrogen bonds) only in some parts of the HBQ crystal simulation. The collected data underline the importance of the intramolecular coupling between the donor and acceptor moieties.

AbstractAggregation-induced emission (AIE) has proven to be a viable strategy to achieve highly efficient room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in bulk by restricting molecular motions. Here, we show that by utilizing triphenylamine (TPA) as an electronic donor that connects to an acceptor via an sp3 linker, six TPA-based AIE-active RTP luminophores were obtained. Distinct dual phosphorescence bands emitting from largely localized donor and acceptor triplet emitting states could be recorded at lowered temperatures; at room temperature, only a merged RTP band is present. Theoretical investigations reveal that the two temperature-dependent phosphorescence bands both originate from local/global minima from the lowest triplet excited state (T1). The reported molecular construct serves as an intermediary case between a fully conjugated donor-acceptor system and a donor/acceptor binary mix, which may provide important clues on the design and control of high-freedom molecular systems with complex excited-state dynamics.

The structural and electronic properties of interfaces composed of donor and acceptor molecules play important roles in the development of organic opto-electronic devices. Epitaxial growth of organic semiconductor molecules offers a possibility to control the interfacial structures and to explore precise properties at the intermolecular contacts. 5,6,11,12-tetraazanaphthacene (TANC) is an acceptor molecule with a molecular structure similar to that of pentacene, a representative donor material, and thus, good compatibility with pentacene is expected. In this study, the physicochemical properties of the molecular interface between TANC and pentacene single crystal (PnSC) substrates were analyzed by atomic force microscopy, grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), and photoelectron spectroscopy. GIXD revealed that TANC molecules assemble into epitaxial overlayers of the (010) oriented crystallites by aligning an axis where the side edges of the molecules face each other along the [1¯10] direction of the PnSC. No apparent interface dipole was found, and the energy level offset between the highest occupied molecular orbitals of TANC and the PnSC was determined to be 1.75 eV, which led to a charge transfer gap width of 0.7 eV at the interface.

The metallic and semiconducting character of a large family of organic materials based on the electron donor molecule tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) is rooted in the partial oxidation (charge transfer or mixed valency) of TTF derivatives leading to partially filled molecular orbital-based electronic bands. The intrinsic structure of such complexes, with segregated donor and acceptor molecular chains or planes, leads to anisotropic electronic properties (quasi one-dimensional or two-dimensional) and morphology (needle-like or platelet-like crystals). Recently, such materials have been synthesized as nanoparticles by intentionally frustrating the intrinsic anisotropic growth. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) has emerged as a valuable technique to characterize the transfer of charge due to its ability to discriminate the different chemical environments or electronic configurations manifested by chemical shifts of core level lines in high-resolution spectra. Since the photoemission process is inherently fast (well below the femtosecond time scale), dynamic processes can be efficiently explored. We determine here the fingerprint of partial oxidation on the photoemission lines of nanoparticles of selected TTF-based conductors.
