Red propolis is a new type of Brazilian propolis. This material, as well as the secretions of 20 plant species that are often mentioned as its probable botanical source, have been investigated by RP-HPTLC. Phytochemical evidence based on UV-VIS spectra, RP-HPLC and GC-MS, showedDalbergia ecastophyllum(L.) Taub. to be the main source of red propolis in Alagoas state. The propolis and plant resin showed high relative percentages of the isoflavonoids 3-Hydroxy-8,9-dimethoxypterocarpan and medicarpin. To our knowledge this is the first report of the secretion of a leguminous species being the source of propolis.

This Special Issue contains innovative research papers on the characterization, chemical composition and physical properties of honey. This constitutes very useful information to avoid frauds and to guarantee the authenticity of this food product. The knowledge of the particularities of honey is increasingly demanded by beekeepers and consumers, and also by labs to typify honeys according to their botanical origin and to check their quality. Melissopalynological, sensorial and physicochemical techniques are being used to study the characteristics of honeys samples from different plant sources and geographical areas. The combination of these analytical techniques with mathematical and statistical methods or chemometrics allows researchers to identify a set of variables or individual parameters that define independent samples, providing a practical solution to classify honey according to the geographical or the botanical origin.

The research of the expanding broken technology of engine connecting rod (also known as the fracture splitting technology) is based on some known factors which effect on connecting rod splitting to make comprehensive analysis on 36MnVS4, the material of connecting rod which is suitable for the fracture splitting technology, it analyses the effect of each chemical composition in steel on mechanical and physical properties, for material steel of new type fracture splitting connecting rod , and makes a theoretical analysis on the fracture splitting technology of the engine connecting rod. Through the analysis and research, a new method to research the fracture splitting of connecting rod is determined, as well as gets some rules to affect process parameter.

AbstractNew type pseudoelasticity in Fe3Al with the D03 structure was examined using the single crystals. The pseudoelasticity occurred due to a reversible motion of 1/4<111> superpartials dragging the nearest-neighbor anti-phase boundaries. The chemical composition and microstructure of Fe3Al alloys strongly influenced the shape recovery ratio and Fe-23.0at%Al alloy with fine domain structure was the most favorable for the appearance of the pseudoelasticity. The recovery ratio of Fe-23.0at%Al exceeded 80 % in the wide temperature range from -50 to 200 oC.

Propolis is a beehive product that bees manufacture by mixing their own wax with vegetable resins collected from different species of trees and bushes. The chemical composition of propolis is very variable because it depends on the flora locally available, and specimens from different geographical and climatic areas display unique properties. In this paper, the results of the chemical characterization of some propolis specimens collected in northern California and in Oregon are presented. Their chemical compositions show that all specimens contain resins from poplars of the Tacamahaca section (balsam poplars) - characteristic of the western part of the North American continent. Nevertheless, some of the specimens are of mixed origin because they also contain resins from poplars of the Aigeiros section (cottonwoods) - also present in this part of the world. Propolis causes allergies in sensitive human individuals, which are due to the presence of certain esters. The contents of known propolis allergenic esters - phenylethyl caffeate, 1,1-dimethylallyl caffeate, benzyl cinnamate, and benzyl salicylate - have been investigated in these specimens and found to depend on the botanical origin.
