Predator community structure is an important selective element shaping the evolution of prey defence traits and strategies. Carabid beetles are one of the most diverse families of Coleoptera, and their success in terrestrial ecosystems is related to considerable morphological, physiological, and behavioural adaptations that provide protection against predators. Their most common form of defence is the chemical secretion from paired abdominal pygidial glands that produce a heterogeneous set of carboxylic acids, quinones, hydrocarbons, phenols, aldehydes, and esters. This review attempts to update and summarise what is known about the pygidial glands, with particular reference to the morphology of the glands and the biological function of the secretions.

Marginalin, a product previously isolated from the pygidial glands of the water-beetle Dytiscus marginalis (Coleoptera), strongly reacts in vitro to form complexes with polyamines of biological interest. With spermin and spermidin, this interaction is specific giving 1:1 complexes which were isolated and studied (physico-chemical data). The results so far observed are discussed in relationship with the known biological properties of spermin and spermidin and the significance of marginalin in the defensive secretion of the beetle

Abstract In pygidial-glands of water beetles (Dytiscidae) 3-indoleacetic acid and phenylacetic acid have been identified by mass-spectroscopical methods and estimated by UV-spectrometry.

Three new pyridine alkaloids were detected in the pygidial glands of some Stenus species. The chemotaxonomic significance of the occurrence of these alkaloids and stenusine in different Stenus species is discussed. The antimicrobial properties of (Z)- and (E)-3-(2- methyl-1-butenyl)-pyridine and the deterrent activities of stenusine and norstenusine were investigated.
