The purpose of this study is to determine the compounds secondary metabolites (alkaloids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids and steroids and terpenoids) contained in the leaves of the banyan tree and can provide therapeutic effects. This research performed at the Laboratory of the Faculty of Health Sciences University of Muhammadiyah Palangkaraya, from May to September 2013. The method used is an experiment to identify the compound, an active compound found anything on the leaves of the banyan tree. Identify the stages of phytochemical composition of the compounds which are present in the banyan tree covering an advance test that consisted of fixation loss on drying, determination of water-soluble extract, and the determination of the ethanol-soluble extract . Followed by the identification of phytochemicals include identification tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and steroids and terpenoids. Where in their identification using liquid extract and extract thick banyan tree was maceration for 24 hours using 95% ethanol for 3 (three) days. The results obtained in this phytochemical identification positive banyan tree contains tannin, saponin and alkaloid. Negative result in the identification of phytochemicals shows that the banyan tree do not contain flavonoid, steroids and terpenoids. Until the advent of the compound of alkaloids, saponins and tannins in the banyan tree are expected to later be used as the initial stages of the manufacture of traditional medicine.

This work describes the chemical composition, and evaluates the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of a hydroalcoholic extract from the leaves of the Licania tomentosa. Gram positive and negative bacterial strains were used in this work. Examination of the phytochemical composition of L. tomentosa revealed the presence of secondary metabolites such as tannins, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, steroids and triterpenoids. An antibacterial assay pointed out that the extract had a lower minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC - 32 ?g/mL) towards Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC12692). The extract also presented antibacterial activity against other assayed bacteria, with the MIC varying between 64 and 512 ?g/ mL. Our findings reveal that the extract presented an antioxidative capacity lower than that of BHT at the same concentration, used as positive control. Our results suggest that the levels and combinations between the secondary metabolites of this plant should be investigated to explain the demonstrated antibacterial activity.

Proximate composition of the aerial parts of three Fagonia species (Fagonia arabica L., F. mollis Delile and F. cretica L.) collected from different habitats were analyzed. Macro- and micro-elements as well as some secondary metabolites were estimated. The obtained results revealed that F. creticus contains appreciable levels of nutritive components considering that its nutritional value (351.06 kcal/100g dry wt.) was remarkably higher than that of F. arabica and F. mollis (327.99 and 293.07 kcal/100g dry wt., respectively). The concentration of Na was relatively the highest among the other estimated macroelements in the studied species followed by K, Ca and Mg, respectively while Fe was the highest microelement followed by Cu, Mn and Zn, respectively. The phytochemical composition revealed that methanolic extract of F. creticus was the richest in total alkaloids and flavonoids, while F. arabica found to be the richest in total phenolics and tannins.

The Impact

This study aimed to study the impact of selected common organic solvents on extractable solids, phytochemical composition, and antioxidant capacity of S. chinensis. The results showed that the tested solvents played an important role in extraction of total solid and phytochemical composition as well as antioxidant capacity of S. chinensis. Acetone (50% v/v) was found to be the optimal extraction solvent for extractable solids (12.2%), phenolic compounds (60 mg GAE/g DW), flavonoids (100 mg CE/g DW), proanthocyanidins (47.4 mg CE/g DW), and saponins (754 mg EE/g DW) as well as antioxidant capacity (ABTS 334 mM TE/g DW, DPPH 470 mM TE/g DW, FRAP 347 mM TE/g DW, and CUPRAC 310 mM TE/g DW). The extract prepared from 50% acetone had high levels of bioactive compounds (TPC 555 mg GAE/g CRE, flavonoids 819 mg CE/g CRE, proanthocyanidins 392 mg CE/g CRE, and saponins 1,880 mg EE/g CRE) as well as antioxidant capacity (ABTS 414 mM TE/g, DPPH 407 mM TE/g, FRAP 320 mg TE/g, and CUPRAC 623 mM TE/g), thus further confirming that 50% acetone is the solvent of choice. Therefore, 50% acetone is recommended for extraction of phenolic compounds, their secondary metabolites, saponins, and antioxidant capacity from the root of S. chinensis for further isolation and utilisation.

Safou (Dacryodes edulis) is consumed by the Ivorian population for its therapeutic virtues. The present study aims to make known the phytochemical composition and antihypercholesterolemic activity of safou cake. For this, phytochemical screening of the aqueous extract of the pulp cake of the safou was carried out. In addition, the antihypercholesterolemic activity of cake was tested in rats (Rattus norvegicus). Results obtained indicate that the aqueous extract of cake contains secondary metabolites such as polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, polyterpenes and sterols and alkaloids. Moreover, this extract allowed, at a dose of 300 mg / kg of PC, to decrease the blood concentration of compounds such as VLDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, total cholesterol and total lipids.On the other hand, at a dose of 100 mg / kg of PC of this extract, the blood level of HDL-C increased significantly in hypercholesterolemic rats (PË‚0.05). This study confirms the antihypercholesterolemic activity of safou cake.Therefore, safou cake could be used to prevent oxidative stress, arterosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes and ischemic cardiovascular disease.

Secondary metabolites of the roots of Eleutherococcus spp. cultivated in Poland, or the bioactivity, are not fully known. The 75% methanol extracts of five Eleutherococcus spp. (E. senticosus, E. divaricatus, E. sessiliflorus, E. gracilistylus, and E. henryi) were examined for the content of polyphenols and phenolic acids as well as for antiacetylcholinesterase, antihyaluronidase, anti-DPPH∗, and cytotoxic activities. The richest in polyphenols were the roots of E. henryi (10.4 mg/g DW), while in flavonoids the roots of E. divaricatus (6.5 mg/g DW). The richest in phenolic acids occurred the roots of E. henryi [protocatechuic acid (1865 μg/g DE), caffeic acid (244 μg/g DE), and p-coumaric and ferulic acids (55 μg/g DE)]. The highest inhibition of AChE was observed for E. gracilistylus and E. sessiliflorus (32%), at the concentration of 100 μg/0.19 mL of the reaction mixture, while that of Hyal for the roots of E. henryi (40.7%), at the concentration of 100 μg/0.16 mL of the reaction mixture. Among five species tested, the E. henryi extract exhibited the strongest HL-60 cell line growth’s inhibition (IC50 270 μg/mL). The extracts reduced DPPH∗ in a time-dependent mode, at the concentration of 0.8 mg/mL. After 90 min from 14.7 to 26.2%, DPPH∗was reduced. A phytochemical composition and activity of the Eleutherococcus species, cultivated in Poland, are still under research; however, on the basis of the results obtained, it may be concluded that they may become a source of phytochemicals and be useful for Europe’s citizens.
