The nanocomposite coatings were prepared on the surface of PVC substrate using spinning technique with attempts of introducing nanosized iron oxide particles with different morphology into the organic-inorganic hybrid matrices. The hybrid matrices were derived from 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with a process of hydrolyzing and condensation. Nanosized iron oxide particles were synthesized by hydrolysis of FeCl3 solution at different pH value and different temperature. The effects of different additions on nanomechanical properties of the nanocomposite coatings were investigated using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and MTS Nano Indenter XP system. It was found that the acicular α-FeOOH and spherical α-Fe2O3 particles were synthesized, both of them dispersed homogeneously. Nanoindentation and nanoscratch behaviors of the nanoindenter system showed that both of the nanocomposite coatings reinforced the nanomechanical properties of the PVC obviously. Especially, the contribution of acicular α-FeOOH was more remarkable than the spherical α-Fe2O3.

By adding CuO into heated Fe (NO3)3 aqueous solution, a precipitation reaction takes place to form nanosized iron oxide. The product obtained were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetized (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy disperse X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental results showed that the product is weakly magnetic nanoclusters based on smaller ferrihydrite Fe5O7(OH)·4H2O nanocrystallites. The nanoclusters are of about 40 nm size and absorbed by Fe (NO3)3. The experimental results are attributed to the Fe (NO3)3 hydrolysis reaction being enhanced by CuO as hydrolyte. A new route is proposed for the preparation of nanosized oxide using hydrolysis enhanced.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) have a wide range of applications, including high-density magnetic storage, catalytic and separation processes, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in vivo imaging of tumor progression. One advantage is that they are sufficiently inert to be injected to the human body without significant counter effects. For these reasons, SPIO are utilized as carriers to target tumor tissues with the aim to visualize the extension of the malignant affection and to cure it. A mimetic coating is needed to overcome the immune system and ensure a sufficient long life to allow SPIO to reach the tumor tissue. In addition, gold nanoparticles were functionalized and coated with the same mimetic film. Differently from iron oxide NPs, those based on gold may be utilized to perform Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) to obtain spatial and chemical information. In this work, we present preliminary results on iron oxide and gold-based NPs synthesized in our laboratories. A full characterization was performed by means of XPS to study both the chemical composition of the SPIO nanoparticles, of their mimetic coatings, and to get structural information.
