Solidification of ternary Al-Cu-Si alloys begins with the development of a complex dendritic network typified by primary (λ1) and secondary (λ2) dendrite arm spacings which depend on the chemical composition of the alloy and on the casting thermal parameters such as the growth rate and the cooling rate. These thermal parameters control the scale of dendritic arms, the size and distribution of porosity and intermetallic particles in the casting. In this paper, λ1and λ2were correlated with experimental thermal parameters i.e., the tip growth rate and the tip cooling rate. The porosity profile along the casting length has also been experimentally determined. The volumetric fraction of pores increase with the increase in alloying Si and with the increase in Fe concentration at the regions close to the casting cooled surface.

Abstract The Norwegian coastline covers more than 10° in latitude and provides a range in abiotic and biotic conditions for seaweed farming. In this study, we compared the effects of cultivation depth and season on the increase in biomass (frond length and biomass yield), chemical composition (protein, tissue nitrogen, intracellular nitrate and ash content) and biofouling (total cover and species composition) of cultivated Saccharina latissima at nine locations along a latitudinal gradient from 58 to 69° N. The effects of light and temperature on frond length and biofouling were evaluated along with their relevance for selecting optimal cultivation sites. Growth was greater at 1–2 m than at 8–9 m depth and showed large differences among locations, mainly in relation to local salinity levels. Maximum frond lengths varied between 15 and 100 cm, and maximum biomass yields between 0.2 and 14 kg m−2. Timing of maximum frond length and biomass yield varied with latitude, peaking 5 and 8 weeks later in the northern location (69° N) than in the central (63° N) and southern (58° N) locations, respectively. The nitrogen-to-protein conversion factor (averaged across all locations and depths) was 3.8, while protein content varied from 22 to 109 mg g−1 DW, with seasonality and latitude having the largest effect. The onset of biofouling also followed a latitudinal pattern, with a delayed onset in northern locations and at freshwater-influenced sites. The dominant epibiont was the bryozoan Membranipora membranacea. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of S. latissima cultivation along a wide latitudinal gradient in North Atlantic waters and underscore the importance of careful site selection for seaweed aquaculture.

Morchella sp. is one of the most expensive mushrooms with a high nutritional profile. In this study, the polysaccharide content of Morchella species was investigated. Specifically, mycelium growth rate, biomass production, sclerotia formation, and glucosamine and total polysaccharides content of six Morchella species grown on a starch-based media were evaluated. Submerged fermentations in potato dextrose broth resulted in a glucosamine content of around 3.0%. In solid-state fermentations (SSF), using potato dextrose agar, a high linear growth rate (20.6 mm/day) was determined. Increased glucosamine and total polysaccharides content were observed after the formation of sclerotia. Biomass and glucosamine content were correlated, and the equations were used for the indirect estimation of biomass in SSF with agro-industrial starch-based materials. Wheat grains (WG), potato peels (PP), and a mixture of 1:1 of them (WG–PP) were evaluated as substrates. Results showed that the highest growth rate of 9.05 mm/day was determined on WG and the maximum biomass yield (407 mg/g) on WG–PP. The total polysaccharide content reached up to 18.4% of dried biomass in WG–PP. The results of the present study proved encouraging for the efficient bioconversion of potato and other starch-based agro-industrial waste streams to morel biomass and sclerotia eliciting nutritional and bioactive value.

Treatment of actively growing Botrytis cinerea hyphae with micromolar concentrations of the dicarboximide fungicide vinclozolin resulted in significant alterations in the growth rate, morphology, and chemical composition of the cells. The addition of vinclozolin resulted in an immediate and severe reduction in the hyphal growth rate and a retardation in the emergence of the second germ tube. Cells treated with vinclozolin had a lower content of pool metabolites than control cells, and this difference increased with time of exposure to the fungicide. In contrast, vinclozolin-treated cells had a higher chitin concentration than control cells. These biochemical alterations were followed by the disorganization and clearing of cells, and by the appearance of dense and dark masses outside the hyphae, presumably composed of cell debris. Hyphae exposed to vinclozolin were more curved and branched and had shorter cells than the controls. The results indicate that vinclozolin causes a slow but generalized leakage of pool metabolites; this release precedes cell lysis and is not the result of a rapid and gross damage to the cytoplasmic membrane.Key words: vinclozolin, Botrytis cinerea, pool metabolites, membrane damage.
