AbstractSubsurface limestone beds (SLBs) are used as a passive treatment technique to remove toxic metals from acid mine drainage (AMD). In this study, we investigated the mechanisms and thermodynamics of metal (manganese, copper, zinc, cadmium, and lead) precipitation in the SLB installed at the Motokura Mine. Field surveys in 2017 and 2018 showed that the pH of the SLB influent (initially 5–6) increased to approximately 8 in the drain between 24 and 45 m from the inlet. This increase was caused by limestone dissolution and resulted in the precipitation of hydroxides and/or carbonates of copper, zinc, and lead, as expected from theoretical calculations. Manganese and cadmium were removed within a pH range of approximately 7–8, which was lower than the pH at which they normally precipitate as hydroxides (pH 9–10). X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis of the sediment indicated that δ-MnO2, which has a high cation-exchange capacity, was the predominant tetravalent manganese compound in the SLB rather than trivalent compound (MnOOH). Biological analysis indicates that microorganism activity of the manganese-oxidizing bacteria in the SLB provided an opportunity for δ-MnO2 formation, after which cadmium was removed by surface complexation with MnO2 (≡ MnOH0 + Cd2+  ⇄  ≡ MnOCd+  +  H+). These findings show that biological agents contributed to the precipitation of manganese and cadmium in the SLB, and suggest that their utilization could enhance the removal performance of the SLB.

Acid mine drainage is highly acidic and contains large quantities of Fe and heavy metal elements. Thus, it is important to promote the transformation of Fe into secondary iron minerals that exhibit strong heavy-metal removal abilities. Using simulated acid mine drainage, this work analyzes the influence of monovalent cations (K+, NH4+, and Na+) on the Fe2+ oxidation and total Fe deposition efficiencies, as well as the phases of secondary iron minerals in an Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans system. It also compares the Cr(VI) (K2Cr2O7) and As(III) (As2O3) removal efficiencies of different schwertmannites. The results indicated that high concentrations of monovalent cations (NH4+ ≥ 320 mmol/L, and Na+ ≥ 1600 mmol/L) inhibited the biological oxidation of Fe2+. Moreover, the mineralizing abilities of the three cations differed (K+ > NH4+ > Na+), with cumulative Fe deposition efficiencies of 58.7%, 28.1%, and 18.6%, respectively [n(M) = 53.3 mmol/L, cultivation time = 96 h]. Additionally, at initial Cr(VI) and As(III) concentrations of 10 and 1 mg/L, respectively, the Cr(VI) and As(III) removal efficiencies exhibited by schwertmannites acquired by the three mineralization systems differed [n(Na) = 53.3 > n(NH4) = 53.3 > n(K) = 0.8 mmol/L]. Overall, the analytical results suggested that the removal efficiency of toxic elements was mainly influenced by the apparent structure, particle size, and specific surface area of schwertmannite.

Abstract Iron (Fe), zirconium (Zr) and titanium (Ti) oxides nanoparticles were each embedded onto a weak acid chelating resin for support using the precipitation method to generate three hybrid adsorbents of hydrated Fe oxide (HFO-P), hydrated Zr oxide (HZO-P) and hydrated Ti oxide (HTO-P). This paper reports on the characterization, performance and potential of these generated nanoadsorbents in the removal of toxic metal ions from acid mine drainage (AMD). The optimum contact time, adsorbent dose and pH for aluminium (Al) (III) adsorption were established using the batch equilibrium technique. The metal levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results confirmed the presence of the metal oxides within the hybrid resin beads. HFO-P, HZO-P and HTO-P adsorbed Al(III) rapidly from synthetic water with maximum adsorption capacities of 54.04, 58.36 and 40.10 mg/g, respectively, at initial pH 1.80 ± 0.02. The adsorption of Al(III) is of the second-order in nature (R2 > 0.98). The nanosorbents removed ten selected metals from environmental AMD and the metal removal efficiency was in the order HTO-P > HZO-P > HFO-P. All three hybrid nanosorbents can be used to remove metals from AMD; the choice would be dependent on the pH of the water to be treated.

The uncontrolled release of acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned mines and tailing piles threatens water resources in many sites worldwide. AMD introduces elevated concentrations of sulfate ions and dissolved heavy metals as well as high acidity levels to groundwater and receiving surface water. Anaerobic biological processes relying on the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria are being considered for the treatment of AMD and other heavy metal containing effluents. Biogenic sulfides form insoluble complexes with heavy metals resulting in their precipitation. The objective of this study was to investigate the remediation of AMD in sulfate reducing bioreactors inoculated with anaerobic granular sludge and fed with an influent containing ethanol. Biological treatment of an acidic (pH 4.0) synthetic AMD containing high concentrations of heavy metals (100 mg Cu2+l−1; 10 mg Ni2+l−1, 10 mg Zn2+l−1) increased the effluent pH level to 7.0–7.2 and resulted in metal removal efficiencies exceeding 99.2%. The highest metal precipitation rates attained for Cu, Ni and Zn averaged 92.5, 14.6 and 15.8 mg metal l−1 of reactor d−1. The results of this work demonstrate that an ethanol-fed sulfidogenic reactor was highly effective to remove heavy metal contamination and neutralized the acidity of the synthetic wastewater.

Pollution is one of the greatest ills plaguing the existence of the ecosystem which could lead to the annihilation of terrestrial and aquatic habitat if not remedied. Acid mine drainage (AMD) and crude oil are among the major land and water pollutants cause by industrial and human activities. The constant exploration, mining, and processing of mineral resources and prevalent use of petroleum products for economic purposes have contributed to contamination of soil and proximate water bodies which results in environmental degradation; thus, remediation becomes necessary. The treatment of AMD contaminated soils using the conventional methods has some room for improvement to meet the remediation purpose. Bioremediation technology provides a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to the treatment of contaminants. This study aims to evaluate the performance of different potential bioremediation techniques and conduct a comparative analysis of these methods for the treatment of AMD and crude oil-contaminated soils. The treatment approach for both pollutants comprises of soils separately contaminated with AMD and crude oil before the application of bioremediation techniques. For the biostimulation study, contaminated soils were amended with varying ratios of the brewery or municipal wastewaters (BWW and MWW), while the bioventing (BVT) treatment involved wastewater amendment and supply of atmospheric air from the vadose zone at 3L/min at 30 minutes intervals every 48 hours. The bacteria strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442 used for the study which was inoculated at 5%(w/w) was cultured in two different media for respective treatments and wastewater was amended as an extra energy source for bioaugmentation (BAU) study while Bioattenuation (BAT) which received no amendment was used as a control treatment for the study. The treatments were conducted in plastic bioreactors under mesophilic conditions for 28 days and samples were collected from each treatment system on weekly basis to analyse for sulfate, heavy metals, and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) reduction. The result of the study showed that the amendment of contaminated soils with wastewater increased alkalinity in the system which enhanced microbial activities for effective remediation which recorded 52.43 and 51.23% average TPH and metal removal efficiency for the BSTc treatment. Also, the combined application of bioremediation techniques was more effective than single application as the introduction of oxygen into the treatment system with wastewater amendment increased the TPH and metal removal efficiency by an average of 12.98 and 13.17% respectively but efforts to enhance sulfate removal by air-injection (BVTa) proved abortive with 17.20 and 14.67% removal efficiencies less than BSTa and BAUa respectively as sulfate-reducing bacteria thrive in an anaerobic environment. However, P. aeruginosa ATCC 15442 adopts the sorption process in the reduction of hydrocarbon and metal toxicity with 42.02 and 41.81% average removal efficiencies respectively and the amendment extra nutrient (wastewater) increased the removal efficiency of these pollutants by 25.24 and 16.23% respectively. The results of the study inferred that wastewater (BWW and MWW), air-injection and P. aeruginosa ATCC 15442 showed great potentials in the degradation and removal of TPH, metals and sulfate contaminants, hence, can serve as a viable strategy for the remediation of AMD and crude oil polluted soils while improving waste management and amelioration of pollution aftermath faced by communities involved in mining and oil production and/or processing. There is a need for optimization to ensure effective remediation while further study is required to validate large scale application.
