A multifunctional corrosion inhibitor was prepared from polyaspartic acid (PASP), sodium gluconate,zinc sulfate,hydroxyphosphonoacetic acid (HPAA) and benzotriazole (BTA). The performance of corrosion inhibition was evaluated by rotary hanging-piece corrosion tests and steady polarization. The result showed that the corrosion inhibitor was an anodic inhibitor and had good corrosion inhibition performance both on A3 carbon steel and H62 copper in seawater. The corrosion inhibition rate of A3 carbon steel was 93.15% and the corrosion inhibition rate of H62 copper was 93.55% when the concentration of corrosion inhibitor was 150 mgL-1in seawater at 40°C.

Abstract The acidic corrosion of carbon steel is a great concern, which has caused serious economic losses on a global scale. Therefore, the exploitation of corrosion inhibition strategy for carbon steel and an in-depth study on its mechanism are of vital importance. Here we have developed a mixed type corrosion inhibitor of PPy-CTS, which incorporated the good solubility and adsorption capacity of chitosan (CTS) into the excellent corrosion inhibition performance of polypyrrole (PPy) by in-situ polymerization of pyrrole on CTS. The corrosion inhibition performance of PPy-CTS composites as a potential corrosion inhibitor for Q235 carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution was investigated by electrochemical (potentiodynamic polarization curve and AC impedance spectroscopy) and surface morphological (scanning electron microscopy and water droplet contact angle) characterization. The results revealed that PPy-CTS with the optimal concentration of 250 ppm achieved the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency of 91.1%. Subsequently, the corrosion inhibition mechanism was furtherly studied. Gibbs free energy obtained from the Langmuir isotherm model suggested that the absorption of PPy-CTS corrosion inhibitor on Q235 steel in 1 M HCl solution belonged to a combined type of physisorption and chemisorption, which resulted in the formation of a physical barrier preventing the carbon steel from corrosion. In addition, the conductive polymer PPy of corrosion inhibitor possessed an oxide-film anodic protection for carbon steel. Ultimately, PPy-CTS effectively suppressed the corrosion reaction of carbon steel in harsh acidic environment through the synergistic effect of physical barrier and anodic protection.

A newly derivative of oxazolidin-5- one namely [2-(2-biphenyl-4-yl-imidazo [1,2-a] pyridine-3-yl)-3-(4-nitro-phenyl)-oxazolidin-5-one (BIPNO5)] was examined as an corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel surface. Quantum mechanical method of Density Functional Theory (DFT) with (B3LYP (6-311++G (2d, 2p)) level of theory was used to calculate the minimize structure, physical properties and inhibition chemical parameters, in vacuum and two solvents (DMSO and H2O), all at equilibrium geometry. The results indicated that the new derivative could adsorb on the surface of carbon steel through the heteroatom, showing that the new inhibitor has good corrosion inhibition performance.

A natural extract of cashew nut shells, Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) was investigated as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 3% NaCl solutions saturated with CO2 gas using electrochemical techniques (i.e. potentiodynamic polarization and ac-impedance). The investigation was performed at different temperatures under static and dynamic conditions using a Rotating Disk Electrode (RDE). It was found that CNSL reduces the electrochemical processes taking place on carbon steel undergoing corrosion. The percentage inhibitorefficiency increases with increase in CNSL concentration and decreases with rise in temperature. Better performance at low CNSL concentration was registered under dynamic conditions and room temperatures. Thus CNSL is a potential corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel undergoing corrosion in CO2 medium.

A multiple non-phosphorus corrosion inhibitor was prepared by mixing polyaspartic acid with itaconic acid homopolymer, sodium gluconate and surfactant alkylolamide in a certain proportion. The corrosion inhibition performance was tested and the mechanism was studied by electrochemical process. The results showed that synergies among components of the agent made the corrosion inhibition rate on carbon steel reach up to 96.96%. This mainly because that a dense adsorbed film formed on the surface of the carben steeel.

Acidizing is one of the stimulation technologies in the oil and gas industry by removing scale, rust, debris or other acid-soluble particulates on the pipe tubing internal surface. The most common acid used is HCl. To avoid problems such as pipe or casing tubing leak due to acidic corrosion, during the acidizing normally applied with inhibition treatment by inorganic corrosion inhibitor with various compositions including quaternary ammonium salts, solvent and often some surfactant to strip oil from acid reactive surfaces. However, most of these compounds are not only expensive but also toxic to the marine environment. It is an obvious remark to point out the importance of low cost, green corrosion inhibitors which is safe to the environment. The wood extract has become important as an environmentally acceptable, readily available and renewable resource for wide range of inhibitors. A Caesalpinia Sappan L modified imidazoline has been synthesized and used as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in API 5L X60 in HCl 1M environment.The aim of the investigation is to find low dosage-high efficiency green corrosion inhibitor.The testing techniques include wheel test weight loss measurement, Tafel polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results of weight loss studies correlated well with those of polarization and Impedance Spectroscopy. Inhibition performance for both Caesalpinia Sappan L modified imidazoline ( CS IMI) and Imidazoline (IMI) increases with increasing inhibitor concentration. The formulated Caesalpinia Sappan L modified imidazoline ( CS IMI), and Imidazoline (IMI) inhibitors give a greater than 90% inhibition efficiency with dosage 25 ppm at a temperature of 90-140°F. Caesalpinia Sappan L modified imidazoline (CS IMI), and Imidazoline (IMI) show comparable inhibition performance. However, at temperature 140oF, Imidazoline (IMI) seems to have a slightly better performance, indicating better thermal stability. Caesalpinia sappan bioactive agents are brazilein and chalcone, and its inhibition mechanism by physisorption obey Langmuir Isotherm, this mode will control charge transfer at surface metal and electrolyte.This result confirms that Caesalpinia sappan modified imidazoline is very promising for the development of green corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas application

The corrosion inhibition performance of molybdate and molybdate compound corrosion inhibitor of carbon steel in seawater were tested using weight loss method, electrochemical polarization curve, and the quaternary compound molybdate corrosion inhibitor were made sure through the experiments. The experiment results show that the compound corrosion inhibitors have obvious synergistic corrosion inhibition effects in the proportion of 40 mg/L molybdate, 10mg/L HEDP, 4mg/L Zn2+ and 50 mg/L glucose acid salts.

This corrosion study assessed the inhibition performance of carbon steel in 1 M of hydrochloric acid (HCl) using Good’s buffer ionic liquids (GBIL) namely 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-(N-Morpholino) propane, [BMIM][MOPS] using electrochemical impedance, potentiodynamic polarization, and weight loss (gravimetric) measurements. GBIL are synthesized by the combination of Good's buffer as anion and various organic bases as the cation. The gravimetric measurements exhibit higher reduction in weight for carbon steel exposed to the acidic environment in the absence of corrosion inhibitor (CI) as compared to carbon steel immersed in the presence of inhibitor molecule. Potentiodynamic polarization study indicates that the synthesized inhibitor acted as a mixed type inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency increases with increase in the concentration of [BMIM][MOPS]. Corrosion protection efficiency ranging from 88% to 90% was featured at 800 ppm of CI in the HCl medium. The adsorption of [BMIM][MOPS] on the carbon steel surface was described by the Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The scanning electron micrographs inspected the morphology of the carbon steel surface exposed to the solution without and with the presence of inhibitor. The result showed that compound effectively suppressed corrosion by the appearance of an improved surface structure of carbon steel with increasing concentration of [BMIM][MOPS].
