Abstract In this study conductive composites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) filled with carbon black (CB) and carbon fiber (CF) were prepared by melt-mixing method. The morphological, rheological, and electrical properties of CB filled composites were compared with CF filled composites by digital multimeter, scanning electron microscope, rotational rheometer, etc. The composites filled with different fillers have same percolation threshold but the EVA concentration has different effect on the two systems. For CB filled composites the increase in EVA concentration decreased resistivity first and reached lowest point when the LDPE:EVA ratio was 70:30; then the resistivity increased, but for CF filled composites the resistivity continued to decrease. The differences were caused by the diverse morphological and filler distribution of two different composite systems. The rheological behaviors of two types of composites also had significant difference; the value of complex viscosity of CB filled composites was about two orders of magnitude more than CF filled composites in low frequency region. It was because CB particles was nano-scale and had large surface area, so it had great influence on the value of complex viscosity of composites.

The effect of the content of vinyl acetate groups in ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer on the properties of polymer composite based on low density polyethylene and polyamide-6 was studied. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing less vinyl acetate groups (10–14 wt.%) has a positive compatibility effect on polymer composite than ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer containing 21–30 wt.% vinyl acetate groups. The polymer composites of LDPE, PA-6, and EVA containing 10–14 wt.% vinyl acetate groups possess the ability of biodegradation. The physical-mechanical properties of sample and molecular mass reduce after 28 days of incubation.

Organically modified layered double hydroxide (OM-LDH) was synthesized via anion exchange reaction and potassium monolauryl phosphate (MAPK) was used as an intercalator. The OM-LDH nanofillers were embedded into low-density polyethylene/ethylene–vinyl acetate (LDPE/EVA) via melt blending process which provided LDPE/EVA/OM-LDH nanocomposites. The structure and properties of the fabricated samples were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and tensile testing. The results showed that the organic anion was intercalated into the interlayer region of LDH and enlarged the interlayer distance. The TGA results of the nanocomposites showed significantly improved thermal stability at a higher temperature when containing 6 wt% OM-LDH due to the good dispersion of OM-LDH in the matrix. The DSC data indicated that the degree of crystallinity was increased obviously due to the incorporation of OM-LDH in the matrix. The formation of organic side chains on the OM-LDH surface also contributed to an improvement in the interfacial adhesion, resulting in enhanced tensile strength and elongation at break compared with LDH.

The incorporation of antimicrobial agents into packaging materials is an effective method to inhibit the microbial population and aimed at specific microorganisms to provide better and safe products. The present study aims at developing an effective antimicrobial film with silver ions as an antimicrobial agent with and without ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). In the present work, two different masterbatches (MBs) were prepared. In the first case MB of 90%, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and 10% silver ions as an antimicrobial agent were prepared. In the second case MB of 80%, LLDPE, 10% silver ion, and 10% EVA were prepared. An antimicrobial film with low-density polyethylene and different percentages of the MB (0–30%) was prepared and tested under Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS Z 2801:2000) for Escherichia coli bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. With the increase in the percentage loading of MB, the living amount of bacteria decreases. The decrease in the living amount of bacteria was greater when EVA was incorporated.
