Bis-maleimide (BMI) resins are widely applied in carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites in aerospace fields, for their excellent thermal and mechanical properties. The effects of thermo-oxidative aging on mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced BMI composites were investigated by SEM with the combination of flexural strength test and inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) test. The results indicated that the thermal-oxidative aging had some effects on mechanical properties of carbon fiber/BMI composites; however the testing temperature or service temperature had much more effects than aging time. With aging time increased, the flexural strength at 150 oC and the ILSS at 25 oC slightly increased, while the ILSS at 150 oC decreased gradually. Both test results of mechanical properties and fracture models of damaged flexural specimens by SEM indicated that the matrix resin in the composites showed some viscoelastic behaviors that resulted in the remarkable dependence of mechanical properties of the composites on temperature. Therefore, the carbon fiber reinforced BMI composites had lower flexural strength and ILSS at 150 oC than that at 25 oC.

AbstractThis paper describes the separation of oxidation resistant components from the seeds of pomegranate (PSA), grape (GSE) and sea buckthorn (SSE). The anti-oxidation properties of the resultant extracts, used as the natural anti-oxidants for polypropylene (PP), were compared with Irganox1010. The effects of these natural antioxidants on the antioxidant levels of PP samples were estimated by thermal oxidative aging and micromixed rheology, OIT, XRD, SEM, TEM and mechanical properties tests of samples before and after aging. The results show that adding PSA, GSE and SSE can obviously increase the mechanical properties of PP. In addition, the molding stability of polypropylene raw material is prolonged and improved. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the PP samples after 240 h of thermal oxidative aging indicates that, the best results, closest to the anti-oxidation ability of Irganox1010, can be obtained when the additive amount is 0.5% (wt%) for PSE or 0.7% (wt%) for GSE.

AbstractComposites of high density polyethylene with three different amounts of modified boron carbide namely: 7 phr (parts per hundred parts of resin), 15 phr and 24 phr have been prepared. These composites show excellent thermal neutron shielding properties which increase with the increase of boron content in the composites matrix. Moreover, the effects of boron carbide on the mechanical properties, the effect of thermal oxidative aging on mechanical properties and swelling of composites in different solvents have also been studied in these composites.

T800 carbon fiber/high-temperature epoxy resin composites with holes were subjected to thermal–oxidative aging, and the effects of different aging temperatures and times on the composite properties were investigated. The mass loss, surface topography, open-hole tensile performance, fracture morphologies, dynamic mechanical properties, and infrared spectra were analyzed. The results showed that chemical aging did not occur with thermal–oxidative aging at 70°C and 130°C. However, chemical aging occurred at 190°C. At 70°C, 130°C, and 190°C, all samples showed a slight increase followed by a slight decrease and stabilization in the open-hole tensile strength. The open-hole tensile strength was maximized after 240 h aging at different temperatures; the open-hole tensile strength after 1920 h aging exceeded that of the unaged samples. All composites experienced through-hole failure. With aging, the glass transition temperature ( T g) was gradually increased and then decreased. After 960 h aging at different temperatures, T g was maximized.

The influence of aniles DL-camphor as N-[(1RS)-camphane-2-ylidene]-2-methylaniline, N-[(1RS)-camphane-2-ylidene]-2-ethylaniline and N-[(1RS)-camphane-2-ylidene]aniline on vulcanization and resistance of butadiene nitrile rubber based elastomers to thermal oxidative aging was studied for the first time. The prospects of using aniles DL-camphor as anti-aging agents have been established. The best effect is achieved when using N-[(1RS)-camphane-2-ylidene]-2-methylaniline in combination with an effective vulcanisation system including sulfur donors tetramethylthiuram disulfide, 4,4'-dithiodimorpholine, and N-cyclohexylbenzothiazole-2-sulphenamide.
