The synthesis of hydrophobic sol by one-step sol-gel process ammonia catalyzed was investigated. The water molar ratio and catalyst molar ratio were discussed to prevent phase segregation during the hydrolysis and co-condensation of the organic and inorganic precursors. The reactant system with water molar ratio 70 could make the reaction rate of MTES slightly less than that of TEOS, so that the hydrolysis - condensation – gelling reaction with MTES and TEOS as co-precursors could be synchronously. With the increase of the MTES/TEOS molar ratio, the reaction rate of the silica sol preparation decreased, the hydrophobicity of the sol and gel increased as the molar ratio MTES/TEOS change from 0.5~4. But the hydrophobicity of the methyl-modified silica sol and gel prepared with pure MTES in the sol-gel process were slightly lower than that of the methyl-modified silica sol and gel prepared with MTES and TEOS as co-precursors.

The silica sol was applied onto 1, 2, 3, 4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) finished cotton fabrics with the attempt to improve the physical properties especially the tensile strength which had a big loss in the previous anti-crease finishing processing. The parameters including the dosage of the coupling agent, the concentration and pH of the sol and the processing methods were studied in detail. Compared to the sample finished with BTCA, 11.8% of the increase in the crease recovery angle and 18.6% of the enhancement in the tensile strength of the cotton fabric also treated with silica sol in the better selected conditions were obtained. The abrasion resistance was also improved.

Cotton fabric was treated with pure silica sol and boron doped partner through sol-gel method in order to improve its thermal and combustion properties. The results of thermo-gravimetric analysis, micro combustion calorimeter, and smoke density test of control showed that the finished cotton fabric had excellent thermal stability and mild combustion behavior with lower heat release rate. Furthermore, the smoke density test also indicated the safety performance of the boron doped silica sol treated cotton fabric in the fire.
