A microwave-assisted process for coating polymer and glass surfaces with semiconducting ZnO submicron particles

ABSTRACTThe early stages of the microwave assisted chemical vapor deposition of diamond on fused silica and silicon substrates were examined with Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Grain size as a function of time was determined for both substrates. Grains formed on fused silica were larger, with smoother growth surfaces than those formed on silicon substrates under the same conditions. For deposition on silica, the particle morphology changes from cuboid to cubo-octahedral for deposition times between 5 and 15 minutes. Also, the glass surfaces were etched during the pretreatment and deposition stages. These results are discussed in terms of mass transport limited growth, and chemical interactions between the gas-phase and the substrate surface.

Spherical submicron particles of materials produced by electrohydrodynamic (EHD) atomization have been used to study a variety of materials processes including nucleation of alternative crystallization phases in iron-nickel and nickel-chromium alloys, amorphous solidification in submicron droplets of pure metals, and quasi-crystal formation in nickel-chromium alloys. Some experiments on pure nickel, nickel oxide single crystals, the nickel/nickel(II) oxide interface, and grain boundaries in nickel monoxide have been performed by STEM. For these latter studies, HREM is the most direct approach to obtain particle crystal structures at the atomic level. Grain boundaries in nickel oxide have also been investigated by HREM. In this paper, we present preliminary results of HREM observations of NiO growth on submicron spheres of pure nickel.Small particles of pure nickel were prepared by EHD atomization. For the study of pure nickel, 0.5 mm diameter pure nickel wire (99.9975%) is sprayed directly in the EHD process. The liquid droplets solidify in free-flight through a vacuum chamber operated at about 10-7 torr.

SummaryTwo patients with hereditary factor XI deficiency developed inhibitors following plasma transfusions. Neither had severe spontaneous bleeding. The patients’ plasmas neutralized both factor XI in plasma, purified factor XI, and purified factor XIa. The inhibitor in both patients’ plasmas adsorbed to Protein A- Sepharose. The inhibitors eluted from Protein A-Sepharose were partially neutralized by kappa and lambda light chain antisera indicating that they were polyclonal IgG antibodies. Both inhibitors markedly decreased adsorption of factor XI to glass surfaces. The cleavage of factor XI by trypsin was unaffected by the inhibitors. The lack of severe spontaneous bleeding in both of these patients strongly suggests that an alternate coagulation mechanism bypassing factor XI must compensate for this severe defect.
