The nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by dispersing of the nanopomegranate seed particles into poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) blend matrix in an aqueous medium by the solvent casting method. These hydrogels were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, and optical contact angle instruments. The nanopomegranate seed, blend, and hydrogel nanocomposites were tested for microbial activity. In addition, cytocompatibilities of these blend and hydrogel nanocomposites/composites were tested on human lymphocyte with in vitro MTS cell viability assays. Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that esterification reaction took place among functional groups in the structure of poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(acrylic acid). The hydrophilic properties of all hydrogels decreased with increasing nanopomegranate seed content. The mean diameters of the nanopomegranate seed particles were about 88 nm. Nanopomegranate seed particles demonstrated antibacterial properties against gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, and gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli. The lymphocyte viabilities increased after addition of nanopomegranate seeds into the polymer blend. The swelling behavior of blend and hydrogels was dependent on the cross-linking density created by the reaction between poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) blend and nanopomegranate seed. Scanning electron microscopy images were highly consistent with Fourier transform infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, and antibacterial activity results.

Abstract Conducting polymer films produced by electropolymerization technique are highly conductive, simple, and suitable for use especially in electronic devices. An attempt has been made to produce polypyrrole-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PPy-PVA) conducting polymer composite films using 0.1 m p-toluene sulfonate dopant at a potential of 1.2 V (vs. standard calomel electrode) on indium tin oxide glass electrode. The potential application of the prepared PPy-PVA conducting polymer composite films as an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material has been investigated in the present study. The EMI shielding effectiveness of PPy-PVA composite films prepared from different experimental conditions was analyzed in the microwave frequency range of 8–12 GHz. The shielding effectiveness of 45.67–35.7 dB has been demonstrated by PPy-PVA conducting polymer composite films, which appears to be very attractive in any EMI shielding applications where a minimum shielding effectiveness of 35 dB is required.

The thermooxidative degradation of poly (vinyl alcohol)/silica (PVA/SiO2) nanocomposite prepared with self-assembly monolayer (SAM) technique is investigated by using a thermogravimetry (TG) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled thermogravimetry (FTIR/TG). The results show that although the thermooxidative degradation process of prepared nanocomposite is similar to that of the pure PVA, its thermooxidative stability has been greatly improved.

Introduction: In this study, Persian gum/poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofiber and whey protein isolate/ poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofiber were fabricated using electrospinning system. Materials & Methods: The effects of supplementation of Oliveria decumbens Vent. essential oil on the physicochemical and biological characteristics of the nanofibers were investigated by applying the techniques including antioxidant activity measurement, scanning electron microscopy, viscosity and conductivity tests, and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Results: The results showed that the incorporation of 1% Oliveria decumbens Vent. essential oil to the polymer dispersions causes the formation of thin nanofibers with the least beads. Both types of nanofibers containing essential oil exhibited significant radical scavenging activities up to 76.82±0.36% and 61.09±0.13% for whey protein isolate/poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofiber and Persian gum/poly (vinyl alcohol) nanofiber, respectively. Conclusion: The results of fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy proposed the structurally incorporation of the essential oil into nanofibers to be considered as novel coating film for active packaging technology.

Biomineralization on surface-modified poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) through an alternate soaking process was investigated. A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-coating on PCL substrate prepared by repetitive adsorption/ drying in an aqueous PVA solution could accelerate hydroxyapatite (HA) deposition while PVA-PCL soaked in aqueous solutions containing Ca2+ and PO3-4 ions alternately. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction of the apatite verified the formed hydroxyapatite in these processes exhibited a close resemblance with calcium phosphates (HA, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2). It was also found that the amount of HA formed increased with both soaking with both soaking cycles and deposition amount of PVA on PCL. This study suggested that simple PVA coating on PCL substrate could serve as a novel way to accelerated HAP formation via alternating soaking.
