The paper studies how microalloying with amorphous boron (Bam) and zirconia (ZrO2) influences the structure and properties of boride coatings. Two factors are found to strongly affect the structure and phase formation in composite coatings produced by electron beam surfacing, especially when using thermoreactive powders: (i) high reactive diffusion between the composite and substrate components, which causes the coating structure degradation, and (ii) slight deviations from phase concentrations and equilibrium crystallization, which give rise to such nonequilibrium phases in the coating structure under the electron beam as ferroboron, ferrotitanium and binary eutectics.

The presence of the process of diffusion of copper into zinc during gas-dynamic spraying of a coating based on a mixture of copper and zinc particles with the formation of the η-phase is shown. Subsequent heat treatment in the furnace at temperature 405÷415 °С is accompanied by the formation of a "multicomponent brass" coating based on β-phase CuZn and γ-phase Cu5Zn8 phases with hardness up to ≈290 HV and a-solid solution with hardness up to ≈120 HV. Porous silicate based sol-gel coatings are promising candidate for low-K dielectric materials for ultra large-scale integrated circuits (ULSIs). To optimize the sol-gel coating process to meet the increasingly stringent requirements in performance and reliability, it is critical to explore advanced analytical tools and techniques to characterize and monitor the coating structure and properties. Spectroscopic ellipsometry, a non-invasive optical technique for determining optical properties and coating thickness, can provide insight into coating structure and properties. In this paper, we determined the refractive index, optical dielectric constant and porosity of sol-gel coatings using ellipsometry with the hypothesis of considering the coating as the mixture of matrix material with void. Models including linear calculation and effective medium approximation (EMA) were employed in ellipsometric data analyses. The ambiguity was effectively reduced for the analyses with EMA model by including the intensity of reflectance of coating in the analyses. This can greatly improve the applicability of the analyses of ellipsometry for porous coatings.

The nickel – phosphorus – copper functional coating was deposited on aluminum alloys substrate by chemical deposition method from malonateglycinate nickel plating solution. The chemical and phase coatings composition was studied by Xray fluorescence and Xray phase analyze. Thermally stimulated phase transitions in deposited Ni – P – Cu coating were detected by differential scanning calorimetry method. The annealing at 250 and 400 °С was shown to lead to the changes in coating structure involving the transition from amorphous to amorphouscrystalline at 250 °С and to crystalline at 400 °С with Ni and Ni3P1 –  δ phases forming. Changes in the structure of Ni–P coating results in the increase of microhardness by 1.6–1.7 times and wear resistance by 3– 4 times. Annealing at 400 °С led to decreasing of corrosion stability of the coatings in 3.5 % sodium chloride solution. The optimum physical, mechanical and protective properties has the attained in the case of Ni – P – Cu coating annealed at 250 °C.

A quick cooling of coatings for the forming of the electrolyte layers with the given phase composition is widely used. In this work the preliminary heating of the specimens was applied instead of quick cooling technology. The influence of the substrate preliminary heating on the ZrO2 – Y2O3 coatings structure and properties was investigated. The optimal of the spraying of coatings from the Ni and ZrO2 – Y2O3 powders mechanical mix was determined. The research on the coating structure was carried out analysing the application of the optical metallography, scanning microscopy and X-ray method.
