In this study, the microcapsules containing binary alkane-alcohol organic eutectic of mixed n-tetradecane and 1-dodecanol (TD-DD) phase change materials as the core and poly (methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) as the shell were prepared by emulsion polymerization reaction. The microcapsules were characterized by using DSC, SEM, FT-IR and TG. The results of DSC test showed that melting and freezing temperatures of the microcapsules are-6.136 °C and 5.203 °C, and total latent heat value are-82.522 J/g and 77.632 J/g, respectively. The SEM and FT-IR analyses indicated that PMMA shell has successfully encapsulated TD-DD. The TD-DD and the microcapsules exhibited in spherical shape. Additionally, the TG test showed that the thermal stability of TD-DD was increased after encapsulation.

Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-graft-cellulose nanofibers (CeNFs) (PMMA-g-CeNF) were synthesized by means of graft-polymerization using Azo initiator in aqueous medium. The synthesized grafted fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Then, PMMA-g-CeNF were hydrolyzed by acid hydrolysis method with different acid constant and hydrolysis time and characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Finally, PMMA-g-CeNF was characterized by thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TG-DTA).

Poly(methyl methacrylate)/SiO2(PMMA/SiO2) hybrid composites were prepared via “grafting onto” strategy based on UV irradiation in the presence of iron aqueous solution. Two steps were used to graft polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) onto the surface of nanosilica, anchoring 3-(methacryloxy) propyl trimethoxysilane (MPTS) onto the surface of nanosilica to modify it with double bonds, and then grafting PMMA onto the surface of nanosilica with FeCl3as photoinitiator. The products were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, TEM, DLS, and XPS. The results showed that it is easy to graft PMMA onto the surface of nanosilica under UV irradiation, and the hybrid particles are monodisperse and have core-shell structure with nanosilica as the core and PMMA layers as the shell. Furthermore, the products initiated by FeCl3have higher monomer conversion, percent grafting, and better monodispersion compared with the products initiated by traditional photoinitiator such as 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-2-methyl-propiophenone (Irgacure 2959).

This article describes the fabrication of SiO2 nanoparticles grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) via a fascinating reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization by adopting “grafting from” approach. The silane coupling agent, S-benzyl S’-trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonate, was anchored onto SiO2 nanoparticles in a simple procedure using a ligand exchange reaction. RAFT agents-anchored SiO2 nanoparticles were then used for the surface-initiated RAFT polymerization of MMA to fabricate structurally well-defined, core-shell SiO2-g-PMMA nanocomposites. The structure and properties of the as-synthesized nanocomposites were investigated by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectrophotometry (FT-IR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM).

Transparent poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/TiO2 nanocomposites have been prepared by solution mixing PMMA with organically soluble titania xerogel. The organically soluble titania xerogel in the form of amorphous phase has been synthesized via a simple sol-gel method, involving hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and gelation. The obtained PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetry (TG) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the interaction between titania nanoparticles and PMMA macromolecular chains led to a homogeneous dispersion of TiO2 in PMMA matrix. The resulting PMMA/TiO2 nanocomposites showed improved thermal stability, high transparency and high UV-shielding efficiency with a small amount of titania xerogel (£3.0 wt%). The present work is of interest for developing a series of transparent UV-shielding nanocomposites.

The polarized FT-IR spectra of Mn2(CO)10, M(CO)6 (M = Cr, W), and CpM′(CO)3 (Cp = η5-C5H5; M′ = Mn, Re) dissolved in a nematic liquid crystal solvent (Merck 1132 TNC) have been recorded at room temperature. Definitive vibrational assignments have been made for the CO stretching modes of the complexes on the basis of their observed polarization behavior. For Mn2(CO)10, assignments are also proposed for MnCO bending modes. The group VIB metal hexacarbonyls are shown to be tetragonally distorted in Merck 1132 TNC. Dichroic spectra were obtained for the CO stretching modes of the CpM′(CO)3 complexes with the use of both Merck 1132 TNC and Kodak X11643 liquid crystal solvents. The complexes orient perpendicularly to the long axes of the components of the Merck liquid crystal and parallel to those of the Kodak one. The dichroic spectra show that the known distortions of the Cp′ rings in these complexes are apparently accompanied by deformation of the M′(CO)3 moieties.
