A novel series of hydroxyl terminated bisphenol-A type novolac epoxy resins modified with propionic acid (MEP) were prepared by one-step ring-opening reaction process in the presence of tetramethylammonium bromide catalyst. The obtained MEP was characterized using FTIR,1HNMR analyses. In addition, Intercross-linked epoxy-polyurethane composites networks were also obtained by curing reaction among MEP, cross linker polyisocyanate IL1351 and phthalic anhydride. The thermal characteristics of the epoxy-polyurethane composites were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal stability of the cured MEP with different ring-opening rate and cured alkyd polyol A450 were compared. The results showed that the obtained epoxy-polyurethane composites had much better thermal stability than the conventional polyurethane system A450/IL1351, and the thermal stability of them was correlated to the content of MEP.

ABSTRACTIn nonaqueous emulsion, moisture-sensitive polymerizations are performed in order to generate nanoparticles, which are not accessible by common aqueous emulsion polymerization. A nonaqueous emulsion, consisting of two immiscible aprotic organic solvents, is stabilized by amphiphilic block copolymers, such as PIb-PEO or PIb-PMMA copolymer, and lead to formation of nanosized dispersed droplets. They act as dispersed “nanoreactors” for the one-step synthesis of poly(urethane) nanoparticles in a polyadditon reaction as well as poly(L-lactide) nanoparticles through ring-opening polymerization, catalyzed by a moisture-sensitive catalyst. The well-dispersed particles possess average diameters below 100 nm and have narrow size distributions owing to the long-term stability of the dispersed droplets in the continuous phase.

Biodegradable polyacid is obtained in one-step ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of carboxylic-acid-functionalized six-membered cyclic carbonate mediated with zirconium (IV) acetylacetonate. Exemplary copolymers with L,L-lactide are described as well. Moreover, zirconium (IV) acetylacetonate is found to be active catalyst of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) ROP in presence of carboxylic acid yielding PTMC end-capped with the acid derivative. Polymerization mechanism is hypothesized demonstrating possibilities of the method in work-saving polycation synthesis and one-step method of conjugate synthesis of well-known biocompatible polyesters and polycarbonates.
