The electrophilic borylation of 2,5-diarylpyrazines results in the formation of boron-nitrogen doped dihydroindeno[1,2-<i>b</i>]fluorene which can be synthesized via mildly air-sensitive techniques and the end products handled readily under atmosphereic conditions. Through transmetallation via diarylzinc reagents a series of derivatives were sythesized which show broad absorption profiles that highlight the versatility of this backbone to be used in organic solar cell devices. These compounds can be synthesized in large yields, in alow number of steps and functionalized at many stages along the way providing a large depth of possibilities. Exploratory device paramaters were studied and show PCE of 2%.

Mono- and dinitro-BN-naphthalenes, i.e., 1-nitro-, 3-nitro-, 1,6-dinitro-, 3,6-dinitro-, and 1,8-dinitro-BNN, were generated in the nitration of 9,10-BN-naphthalene (BNN), a boron–nitrogen (BN) bond-embedded naphthalene, with AcONO2 and NO2BF4 in acetonitrile. The nitrated products were isolated and characterized by NMR, GC-MS, IR, and X-ray single crystallography. The effects of the nitration on the electron density and aromaticity of BNN were evaluated by B-11 NMR analysis and HOMA calculations.

The reaction of (C6F5)2BCl with 8-lithio-N,N-dimethyl-1-naphthylamine (1) afforded the fivemembered ring system 8-bis(pentafluorophenyl)boryl-N,N-dimethyl-1-naphthylamine (2) with an intramolecular dative B-N bond. The compound was characterised by elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
