A new nitrogen-doped metal oxide photocatalyst Ba(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3−xNy (BMTON) with an absorption edge of ca. 560 nm was synthesized, showing obvious H2 or O2-evolution half reaction activities under visible light irradiation for promising solar water splitting.

AbstractWe have investigated the defect structure and protonic transport properties of nonstoichiometric complex perovskite-type compounds of the type A3B'1+xNb2-xO9-δ. where A and B' are both divalent ions. Protons are incorporated by treatment in H2O vapor and their presence is manifested by the appearance of an OH band in the IR spectra, as well as by the large increase in electrical conductivity to produce excellent protonic conductors, with lower activation energies. A non-classical isotope effect, in which the Arrhenius plots for D+ and H+ cross over, can be explained by a modification of the classical ART hopping theory.

ABSTRACTA novel series of photocatalysts for an overall water splitting is reported. The catalysts have a layered perovskite type structure with a general formula of A2−xLa2Ti3−xNbxO10 (A = K, Rb, Cs; x = 0, 0.5, 1.0). The catalysts, except for the one with x=1.0, are spontaneously hydrated, and the band gap irradiation induced efficient evolution of H2 and O2 in a stoichiometric ratio from an aqueous alkaline solution when a proper amount of Ni loading was made. The reaction mechanism of water splitting on these catalysts is discussed on the bases of the structural study of the catalysts.
