In the title coordination polymer, [Cd2(SO4)2(C13H8N4)(H2O)2]n, there are two crystallographically independent CdIIcentres with different coordination geometries. The first CdIIcentre is hexacoordinated by four O atoms of four sulfate ligands, one water O atom and one N atom of a 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (IP) ligand, giving a distorted octahedral coordination environment. The second CdIIcentre is heptacoordinated by four O atoms of three sulfate ligands, one water O atom and two N atoms of one chelating IP ligand, resulting in a distorted monocappedanti-trigonal prismatic geometry. The symmetry-independent CdIIions are bridged in an alternating fashion by sulfate ligands, forming one-dimensional ladder-like chains which are connected through the IP ligands to form two-dimensional layers. These two-dimensional layers are linked by interlayer hydrogen bonds, leading to the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular network.

Three new mercury(II) coordination compounds, {[HgCl(pic)]}n (1), [HgCl(pic)(picH)] (2), and [HgBr(pic)(picH)] (3) (picH = pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, picolinic acid) were prepared by reactions of the corresponding mercury(II) halides and picolinic acid in an aqueous (1) or alcohol–methanol or ethanol (2 and 3) solutions. Two different types of coordination compounds were obtained depending on the solvent used. The crystal structures were determined by the single-crystal X-ray structural analysis. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional (1-D) coordination polymer with mercury(II) ions bridged by chelating and bridging N,O,O′-picolinate ions. Each mercury(II) ion is four-coordinated with a bidentate picolinate ion, a carboxylate O atom from the symmetry-related picolinate ion and with a chloride ion; the resulting coordination environment can be described as a highly distorted tetrahedron. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural mononuclear coordination compounds, each mercury(II) ion being coordinated with the respective halide ion, N,O-bidentate picolinate ion, and N,O-bidentate picolinic acid in a highly distorted square-pyramidal coordination environment. Compounds 1–3 were characterized by IR spectroscopy, PXRD, and thermal methods (TGA/DSC) in the solid state and by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy in the DMSO solution.

In the title compound, [Tb(C2H3O2)2(C11H10N4)(H2O)2]NO3·H2O, the Tb3+ ion is nine-coordinated in a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic geometry by the three N atoms of the tridentate 1-(pyridin-2-ylmethylidene)-2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazine ligand, four carboxylate O atoms of two chelating acetate groups and two O atoms of the coordinating water molecules. The organic hydrazine ligand is disordered over two orientations with a refined occupancy ratio of 0.52 (3):0.48 (3). All bond lengths in the coordination environment of the Tb3+ ion are slightly larger than those observed in the isostructural Y3+ and Er3+ complexes. In the crystal, the complex cations are linked by pairs of O—H...O hydrogen bonds into dimers. These dimers, nitrate anions and non-coordinating water molecules are joined by O—H...O and N—H...O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional structure.
