Abstract Adults with cerebral palsy (CP) have higher risk of developing geriatric syndromes. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage between healthy aging and dementia, often co-morbid with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We recently showed an “accelerated aging model”, where CP shares similar CVD risk factors with MCI, potentially accounting for CP’s increased risk of dementia. In this study, we further examined sex differences between CP and MCI (aim 1) and within CP (aim 2). From an accredited clinical motion analysis laboratory at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CP) and a university in Singapore (MCI), we recruited 72 adults with CP [mean (SD) of age=20 (5.3), Sex: men=47.2% and women=52.8%] and MCI [mean (SD) of age=71.28 (6.03), Sex: men=29.2% and women=70.8%]. We analyzed blood Pressure (BP), Framingham Heart Study Score (FHSS), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Compared to MCI, women with CP had lower BDNF (β=-3.550, 95% CI=-5.659 to -1.441, p=0.001), while men with CP had lower diastolic BP (β=-28.204, 95% CI=-52.148 to -4.260, p=0.022). Both women and men with CP also had lower FHSS, compared to MCI (β=-2.515, 95% CI=-3.721 to -1.309, p<0.001; β=-3.724, 95% CI=-5.561 to -1.888, p<0.001, respectively). Women in the CP cohort showed lower FHSS (β=-0.172, 95% CI=-0.310 to -0.033, p=0.016). We found sex-related differences in BDNF and CVD markers. Comparing across and within cohorts, although having lower BDNF levels, women with CP had better FHSS. These findings support our accelerated aging hypothesis, and further suggest sex differences in aging-related risk factors in CP, supporting sex-related precision medicine approach.

Touchscreen devices (e.g. tablets) can be supportive for people with mild dementia. This study identified user requirements for the development of a tool for selecting usable apps in the domains of self-management and meaningful activities. Eight focus groups with people with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia and informal carers were conducted using an exploratory study design. In study one, we identified meaningful activities and self-management support. In study two, we explored needs, wishes and abilities regarding the use of apps. The outcomes were analysed using inductive content analysis based on grounded theory. Three categories were identified in study one: (1) past meaningful activities, (2) present meaningful activities and (3) self-management support. Two categories emerged from the data of study two, with two and three themes, respectively. (1) Needs and wishes of users with regard to (a) the functionality of apps and (b) technical features of apps. (2) Abilities of users in terms of (a) physical and cognitive condition, (b) independent use of apps on a tablet and (c) skills to use the touchscreen and tablet. Based on these results, we will develop filters for people with mild dementia to select apps which match their individual needs, wishes and abilities.

The purpose of the study is to explore the characterological features of adolescents with cerebral palsy with various non-psychotic mental disorders of residual organic origin. A psychodiagnostic examination of 73 adolescents with various clinical forms of cerebral palsy, who were diagnosed with nonpsychotic mental disorders of residual organic origin, was carried out: in 31 (42.5 %) – mild cognitive impairment, 42 (57.5 %) – organic emotionally labile disorder. The study used psycho-diagnostic technique “Pathocharacterological diagnostic questionnaire” of A.E. Lichko, that intended to determine the types of accentuations of character and variants of constitutional psychopathy, psychopathic development, and organic psychopathy in adolescence and youth (14-18 years). All adolescents underwent rehabilitation using Intensive Neurophysiological Rehabilitation System (INRS) in the Kozyavkin International Rehabilitation Clinic (Ukraine, Truskavets). The survey was conducted in the first three days of being adolescents in the rehabilitation center. The results of the study indicate that in 100 % of examined adolescents with cerebral palsy, various types of character accentuations were diagnosed. In adolescents with mild cognitive impairment, labile (29.0 %), epileptoid (24.2 %), sensitive (16.1 %), and astheno-neurotic (12.9 %) types are prevailed. In adolescents with organic emotionally labile disorder, the most commonly diagnosed types are epileptoid (22.1 %), sensitive (21.0 %), hysteroid (17.4 %), and labile (14.3 %) types. In the group of adolescents with mild cognitive impairment (F06.7), a labile type of character accentuation was diagnosed significantly more frequently (p < 0.05) in boys (36.9 % ± 10,0 %) than in girls (6.25 % ± 12,0 %). The study made it possible to establish the characterological features of personality development and emotional disorders in adolescents with cerebral palsy and to predict their importance in the formation of psychopathological disorders and the quality of socio-psychological adaptation of these groups of patients.
