Abstract In this paper, I discuss a type of construction that is rarely if ever mentioned in connection with diachronic cyclicity: wh-interrogative marking. In particular, I shall compare sentential negation with wh-marking in French and point to interesting commonalities between the prototypical diachronic cycle (negation) and interrogative marking. The pragmatic contrast between question types in Old French is shown to be mirrored in a similar contrast in Modern French, with the previously “strong” est-ce que interrogative now being a weaker one. In addition, I argue that reversal of anaphoric direction is another shared feature in the history of negation and of the est-ce que interrogative.

For images with distortions or repetitive patterns, the existing matching methods usually work well just on one of the two kinds of images. In this paper, we present novel triangle guidance and constraints (TGC)-based feature matching method, which can achieve good results on both kinds of images. We first extract stable matched feature points and combine these points into triangles as the initial matched triangles, and triangles combined by feature points are as the candidates to be matched. Then, triangle guidance based on the connection relationship via the shared feature point between the matched triangles and the candidates is defined to find the potential matching triangles. Triangle constraints, specially the location of a vertex relative to the inscribed circle center of the triangle, the scale represented by the ratio of corresponding side lengths of two matching triangles and the included angles between the sides of two triangles with connection relationship, are subsequently used to verify the potential matches and obtain the correct ones. Comparative experiments show that the proposed TGC can increase the number of the matched points with high accuracy under various image transformations, especially more effective on images with distortions or repetitive patterns due to the fact that the triangular structure are not only stable to image transformations but also provides more geometric constraints.

This paper aims to examine the meeting points between phraseology and humor research, focusing on the role and the functions of fixed phrases in humor discourse. The examples to illustrate certain aspects of usage of fixed phrases for joke purposes are taken mainly from social media such as Facebook and Twitter and include jokes in English, German, Lithuanian, Russian, and Polish. In the course of the investigation, a distinction ought to be made between set phrases (idioms in the narrower sense of the term, proverbs, catch phrases etc.) and fixed phrases in general. Set phrases (phrasemes) have an “added value” regarding their meaning – be it a figurative element, be it ready-made reasoning or behavioral models in short form in the case of adages. In humor discourse idioms – and proverbs – are used mainly for wordplay, in which both the literal and the idiomatic meaning are activated. The wordplay can happen also in verse form. Adages can be transformed or twisted resulting in new parodistic or funny sayings. Fixed phrases outside of the phraseology can be separated into two groups: phrases typical for a particular discourse type and joke frame related phrases. The former, as means to evoke a certain frame, are used in parodistic jokes (e.g., the phrase ladies if he evokes the dating tips frame). The latter constitute a distinct class of fixed phrases which can be found only in the humor discourse: these phrases act as joke formulae und provide a basis for bigger or smaller joke categories. Certain phrases in this group, such as checks notes or nothing like deserve a mention as irony markers with a distinctive evaluative character. The shared feature of all these idiomatic and non-idiomatic phrases is that they are well-known, re-occur in the language and, in that respect, can considered belonging to the sphere of interests of phraseology. Regarding the main functions of fixed phrases in the humor discourse, they can contribute to the social play, provide the cues to switch to a nonserious humor mindset or express evaluation – from mild mockery to aggressive ridicule.

Diverse pathogen- and damage-associated stresses drive inflammation via activation of the multimolecular NLRP3–inflammasome complex. How the effects of diverse stimuli are integrated by the cell to regulate NLRP3 has been the subject of intense research, and yet an accepted unifying hypothesis for the control of NLRP3 remains elusive. Here, we review the literature on the effects of NLRP3-activating stimuli on subcellular organelles and conclude that a shared feature of NLRP3-activating stresses is an organelle dysfunction. In particular, we propose that the endosome may be more important than previously recognized as a signal-integrating hub for NLRP3 activation in response to many stimuli and may also link to the dysfunction of other organelles. In addition, NLRP3–inflammasome-activating stimuli trigger diverse posttranslational modifications of NLRP3 that are important in controlling its activation. Future research should focus on how organelles respond to specific NLRP3-activating stimuli, and how this relates to posttranslational modifications, to delineate the organellar control of NLRP3.

In Korean compound nouns, the onset of the second element tensifies: /pjəl + picʰ/ → [pjəl.p*icʰ]. This process displays a substantial number of exceptions. We show that in the Yanbian dialect phonological factors influence compound tensification; their influence is confirmed by the results of a wug test. These results mostly mirror generalisations informed by lexical data, but a pattern not clearly observed in the existing lexicon also emerged (analytic bias or ‘overlearning’), while phonologically implausible interactions were not actively incorporated (‘underlearning’). Preliminary acoustic analysis motivates an OCP restriction against multiple laryngeally marked segments, due to the shared feature [long non-modal voicing]. But in simplex nouns the co-occurrence of two tense onsets is overrepresented. This apparent contradiction is explained by a directionality difference: compound tensification is progressive, as opposed to the regressive assimilation of creaky voice from the vowel of the following syllable in simplex words.

In recent years great success has been achieved in sentiment classification for English, thanks in part to the availability of copious annotated resources. Unfortunately, most languages do not enjoy such an abundance of labeled data. To tackle the sentiment classification problem in low-resource languages without adequate annotated data, we propose an Adversarial Deep Averaging Network (ADAN 1 ) to transfer the knowledge learned from labeled data on a resource-rich source language to low-resource languages where only unlabeled data exist. ADAN has two discriminative branches: a sentiment classifier and an adversarial language discriminator. Both branches take input from a shared feature extractor to learn hidden representations that are simultaneously indicative for the classification task and invariant across languages. Experiments on Chinese and Arabic sentiment classification demonstrate that ADAN significantly outperforms state-of-the-art systems.
