Abstract Comparable volatility data are presented for three phenolic and five aromatic amine compounds. Vapor pressure curves for the materials are given along with the vapor pressure equations derived from these curves. The equations are used to calculate temperatures at which the eight compounds would have equal vapor pressure. Vapor pressures of each material are calculated at specified temperatures. Data are given for several methods of determining actual losses of antioxidants at several different temperatures and at several different airflows. Surface effects are also studied. In general, all methods give the same relative rating of the eight materials, but quantitative data vary considerably with the method used.

Nanodiamonds (NDs) can considerably improve the mechanical and thermal properties of polymeric composites. However, the tendency of NDs to aggregate limits the potential of these non-toxic, mechanically- and chemically-robust nanofillers. In this work, tough, flexible, and stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte films composed of cross-linked poly(butyl acrylate-co-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (P(BA-co-DMAEMA)) were prepared by photopolymerization. The effects of the added carboxylate-functionalized NDs on their mechanical and stimuli-responsive properties were studied. When the negatively charged NDs were added to the polymerization media directly, the mechanical properties of the films changed only slightly, because of the uneven distribution of the aggregated NDs in the films. In order to disperse and distribute the NDs more evenly, a prepolymerized polycation block copolymer complexing agent was used during the photopolymerization process. This approach improved the mechanical properties of the films and enhanced their thermally-induced, reversible phase-transition behavior.

n-Alkanol intercalation complexes of iron(III) oxide chloride FeOCl · a n-CxHx+1OH (x = 1-18) are obtained from the amine intercalates by replacement reaction or by a "propping-open" procedure. The alkanol content is slightly variable with a = 0.54 in the alkanol richest phases and 0.46 after heating to 110 °C. In the alkanol richest phases the long chain alkanol molecules (x ≤ 12) form bilayers in the interlayer region of the FeOCl with the major part of each chain in all trans conformation and perpendicular to the layers of the host lattice. The complexes undergo a series of reversible phase transformations on heating. The arrangement of short chain alkanols (x ≤ 6) is less regular. At higher temperatures ( > 130 °C) condensation to FeO(OR)nCl1-n is observed. The alkoxylated derivatives are also capable of forming intercalation complexes.
