Most of the emerging electronic devices are wearable in nature. However, the frequent changing or charging the battery of all wearable devices is the big challenge. Interestingly, with those wearable devices that are directly associated with the human body, the body can be used in transferring or generating energy in a number of techniques. One technique is triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG). This chapter covers different applications where the human body is used as a triboelectric layer and as a sensor. Wearable TENG has been discussed in detail based on four basic modes that could be used to monitor the human health. In all the discussions, the main focus is to power the wearable healthcare internet of things (IoT) sensor through human body motion based on self-powered TENG. The IoT sensors-based wearable devices related to human body can be used to develop smart body temperature sensors, pressure sensors, smart textiles, and fitness tracking sensors.

A self-powered mechanical energy harvesting system consists of the storage system and the energy scavenging TENG. Triboelectric nanogenerator includes a system which integrates a self-powered sensor and the power generator, this triboelectric nanogenerator has the potential to be used in a modern wearable electronic TENG. It has been reported that triboelectric nanogenerator working under complicated deformation like bending, stretching and twisting brings the main problem. Here we have fabricated the shape adaptive Triboelectric nanogenerator which solves all the deformation issues and can harvest the mechanical energy through human body motion in any deformation, the fabricated TENG is a self-powered sensor which can sense the different human activities and can monitor the health issues, the TENG stores the energy directly to the capacitor for powering the wearable electronics. A human skin based triboelectric nanogenerator was designed from the silicon rubber and the copper acetate-II used as the electrode, which makes the TENG flexible self-powered sensor, it can be stretched up to 200%. The stretchable nature and the flexibility of the human skin based silicon rubber triboelectric nanogenerator makes it the promising flexible and shape-adaptive energy harvesting TENG. The fabricated TENG generated the open circuit voltage 70 V and the short circuit current 11 μA and delivered the power 55 μW at the load of 80 MΩ. 42 LEDs were powered directly from the TENG. The fabricated TENG has human skin tactile property which does not harm the human skin while using it multiple times. The layer of copper acetate is completely coated with silicone rubber. The fabricated TENG is flexible, biocompatible and cost effective.

Recently, wearable, self-powered, active human motion sensors have attracted a great deal of attention for biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, and entertainment. Although some progress has been achieved, new types of stretchable and wearable devices are urgently required to promote the practical application. In this article, targeted at self-powered active human motion sensing, a stretchable, flexible, and wearable triboelectric nanogenerator based on kinesio tapes (KT-TENG) haven been designed and investigated systematically. The device can effectively work during stretching or bending. Both the short-circuit transferred charge and open-circuit voltage exhibit an excellent linear relationship with the stretched displacements and bending angles, enabling its application as a wearable self-powered sensor for real-time human motion monitoring, like knee joint bending and human gestures. Moreover, the KT-TENG shows good stability and durability for long-term operation. Compared with the previous works, the KT-TENG without a macro-scale air gap inside, or stretchable triboelectric layers, possesses various advantages, such as simple fabrication, compact structure, superior flexibility and stability, excellent conformable contact with skin, and wide-range selection of triboelectric materials. This work provides a new prospect for a wearable, self-powered, active human motion sensor and has numerous potential applications in the fields of healthcare monitoring, human-machine interfacing, and prosthesis developing.

AbstractThe well-developed preform-to-fiber thermal drawing technique owns the benefit to maintain the cross-section architecture and obtain an individual micro-scale strand of fiber with the extended length up to thousand meters. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a two-step soluble-core fabrication method by combining such an inherently scalable manufacturing method with simple post-draw processing to explore the low viscosity polymer fibers and the potential of soft fiber electronics. As a result, an ultra-stretchable conductive fiber is achieved, which maintains excellent conductivity even under 1900% strain or 1.5 kg load/impact freefalling from 0.8-m height. Moreover, by combining with triboelectric nanogenerator technique, this fiber acts as a self-powered self-adapting multi-dimensional sensor attached on sports gears to monitor sports performance while bearing sudden impacts. Next, owing to its remarkable waterproof and easy packaging properties, this fiber detector can sense different ion movements in various solutions, revealing the promising applications for large-area undersea detection.
