The electrical and optical properties of tandem organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) fabricated utilizing an organic bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) and 1,4,5,8,9,11- hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN) charge generation layer (CGL) were investigated to enhance their efficiency. While the operating voltage of the tandem OLEDs with a BEDT-TTF and HAT-CN CGL at 50 mA/cm2 was 11.2 V lower than that of the tandem OLEDs without a CGL, the current efficiency of the tandem OLEDs with a BEDT-TTF and a HAT-CN CGL at 50 mA/cm2 was 0.8 cd/A higher than that of the tandem OLEDs without a CGL. An increase in the current efficiency and a decrease in the operating voltage of the tandem OLEDs with a BEDT-TTF and an HAT-CN CGL were attributed to the enhancement of the electron injection due to its existence in the highest occupied molecular orbital level of the BEDT-TTF between the HAT-CN and the tris-(8- hydroxyquinoline)aluminum layer.

AbstractWe report on the enhanced conductivity of the benzoic-acid-treated poly(3,4-ethlenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrode for use in highly flexible, organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). The conductivity of the benzoic-acid-treated PEDOT:PSS electrode increased from 1 to 1583.2 S/cm, in comparison with that of the pristine PEDOT:PSS electrode, due to a complex factor of the H+ mole % and the dielectric constant of the benzoic solution. Among the post-treatment methods of the PEDOT:PSS electrodes, the operating voltage at 1000 cd/m2 of OLEDs fabricated utilizing the PEDOT:PSS electrode with the benzoic acid treatment has the lowest value, and its maximum luminance is 24,400 cd/m2, which are 1.54 and 2.15 times higher than those of OLEDs using PEDOT:PSS electrodes treated with dimethyl sulfoxide and methanol, respectively. The luminance of a flexible OLED with a benzoic-acid-treated PEDOT:PSS electrode after 1400 bending cycles decreased to 83% of the initial luminance, resulting in excellent mechanical stability.

Tandem organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) with a mixed organic n-type 4,4′,4″-methylidynetris (n,n-dimethylaniline) and organic p-type 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile layer embedded into a charge generation layer (CGL) were fabricated to enhance their current efficiency. The operating voltage of the tandem OLEDs with a mixed layer at 10 mA/cm2 was 1 V lower than that of the tandem OLEDs without a mixed layer due to the electrons generated from the mixed layer. The matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometer spectra clarified the charge generation behaviors of the mixed layer into the CGL. The current efficiency of the tandem OLEDs with a mixed layer at 10 mA/cm2 was 48.2 cd/A, which was much larger than that without a mixed layer. The increase in the current efficiency for the tandem OLEDs was attributed to the enhancement of the electron injection efficiency in a CGL resulting from the insertion of the mixed layer.

Compared to the PtOO7-based system, the greater EQE of the PtON7-based system is mainly governed by the stronger energy transfer efficiency (ηEET); thus, it is necessary to evaluate ηEET from hosts to guests for the rational design of OLEDs.
