This paper focuses on the fatigue behavior of aluminum alloy welded joints, which can represent points of weakness in the ship structure. The traditional methods of fatigue assessment of welded joints have some limitations and are extremely time consuming. The Risitano method, based on thermographic analysis, has been applied to overcome these difficulties by predicting the fatigue behavior of welds. Experimental tests have been carried out to assess and compare the fatigue capability(S-N curves, endurance limits) of different welded joints, obtained by means of friction stir welding (FSW) and metal inert gas (MIG) welding. Fatigue predictions obtained resorting to the thermographic method (TM) show good agreement with those derived from the traditional procedure. Thus, TM proves to be a powerful tool also for the characterization of the kind of welded joints mentioned.

Dissimilar metal welded joints (DMWJs) possess significant localized mechanical heterogeneity. Using finite element software ABAQUS with the User-defined Material (UMAT) subroutine, this study proposed a constitutive equation that may be used to express the heterogeneous mechanical properties of the heat-affected and fusion zones at the interfaces in DMWJs. By eliminating sudden stress changes at the material interfaces, the proposed approach provides a more realistic and accurate characterization of the mechanical heterogeneity in the local regions of DMWJs than existing methods. As such, the proposed approach enables the structural integrity of DMWJs to be analyzed in greater detail.

Abstract The influence of surface heat treatment using laser radiation on the fatigue strength and corresponding microstructural evolution of AISI 4140 alloy steel was investigated in this research. The AISI 4140 alloy steel was radiated by a diode laser to give surface temperatures in the range between 600 and 800°C, and subsequently underwent vibration peening. The fatigue behavior of surface-treated specimens was examined using a giga-cycle ultrasonic fatigue test, and it was compared with that of non-treated and only-peened specimens. Fatigue fractured surfaces and microstructural evolution with respect to the laser treatment temperatures were investigated using an optical microscope. Hardness distribution was measured using Vickers micro-hardness. Higher laser temperature resulted in higher fatigue strength, attributed to the phase transformation.
