Fragestellung: Um die Effektivität von Lehrerausbildungsprogrammen zu verbessern, ist es wichtig die unterschiedlichen Manifestationsformen der Depression bei jugendlichen Schüler und Schülerinnen gründlicher zu analysieren. Diese Studie untersucht die Ausprägung und Häufigkeit internalisierender Auffälligkeiten bei Jugendlichen mit depressiver Symptomatik und deren Zusammenhang zu einem erhöhten Suizidrisiko. Methodik: Mit dem Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale-2, dem Youth Self-Report und dem Suicide Probability Scale wurden 403 Jugendliche an österreichischen allgemeinbildenden höheren Schulen (212 Mädchen und 191 Buben) im Alter zwischen 16 und 18 Jahren untersucht. Ergebnisse: 35 %, also über ein Drittel der Jugendlichen mit depressiven Symptomen, liegen zwar im internalisierend auffälligen Bereich, jedoch zeigen sie keine Auffälligkeiten im externalisierenden Bereich. Anhand der Regressionsanalyse zeigte sich, dass im internalisierenden Bereich insbesondere körperliche Beschwerden, Angst und Depressivität ausgeprägt sind. Neben diesen deuten aber auch Aufmerksamkeitsprobleme und schizoid zwanghaftes Verhalten auf eine depressive Symptomatik hin. Hinsichtlich des Suizidrisikos sind Depressivität, Angst, schizoid zwanghaftes Verhalten, soziale Probleme und aggressives Verhalten prädiktiv. Schlussfolgerungen: Diese Studienergebnisse werden im Zusammenhang mit bereits bestehenden Studien zur Erkennung von Verhaltensauffälligkeiten im schulischen Kontext diskutiert. Durch die Integration der Ergebnisse in Aus- und Fortbildung von Lehrpersonen soll eine Sensibilisierung auf den Bereich depressiver Jugendlicher mit internalisierenden Symptomen ermöglicht und die Identifikation erleichtert werden.

Abstract Background Exploring etiological clues to adolescent depression, especially in female adolescents, might be helpful to improve the social environment of female adolescents. The aim at this study is to explore psycho-social factors of female adolescents with high depressive symptomatology and gender differences in depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. Method We examined 4100 adolescents from Wuhan city and Jianli county via a cross-sectional study. Depressive symptomatology was screened through the Chinese version of Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to explore the factors related to high depressive symptomatology in female and male adolescents, respectively. Results The prevalence of high depressive symptomatology in female and male were 38.9 and 30.2% respectively. The psycho-social factors of high depressive symptomatology in female adolescents were age (Adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.201, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.076 ~ 1.341), single parent family (aOR = 2.004, 95%CI, 1.448 ~ 2.772) and fathers’ education level (compared to primary school and below, [Junior middle school, aOR = 0.641, 95%CI, 0.439 ~ 0.934; Senior middle school, aOR = 0.603, 95%CI, 0.410 ~ 0.888; College degree and above, aOR = 0.639, 95%CI, 0.437 ~ 0.936]). Conclusion Fathers’ education level was associated with high depressive symptomatology in female adolescents. Female adolescents whose father with primary school education or below deserves more attention. Further epidemiologic researches need to be conducted to explore the different risk factors between female and male adolescents in China.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine the reliability and validity of the short form of the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (RADS-SF). Method: A sample of 9567 randomly selected New Zealand secondary school students participated in the Youth2000 Health and Wellbeing Survey that included the full-length version of the RADS. The reliability and validity of the subset of items that make up the RADS-SF and its comparability to the original version were assessed using Cronbach's alpha, kappa statistics, correlations between the two versions of the instrument, confirmatory factor analysis and correlation to other questions in the survey considered likely to be associated with depression. Results: The RADS-SF had Cronbach's alpha of 0.88, was strongly correlated (0.95) to the RADS, had acceptable fit for the data (χ2=2823.27, df=35, comparative fit index=0.96, root mean square error of approximation=0.092, 90% confidence interval=0.089–0.095, standardized root mean square residual=0.042), showed configural invariance across gender, age and ethnic groups, and was strongly correlated with other depression-related questions, such as suicidal ideation (r=0.48). While the overall agreement for classification of depression by the two scores was good (κ=0.75), a higher percentage of students were classified as having depressive symptoms using the recommended RADS-SF cut-off point of 26 compared with the RADS criteria. Conclusions: The RADS-SF was found to have acceptable reliability and validity and to have psychometric properties comparable to the RADS in a large population of New Zealand adolescents.

Background. Orphan adolescents are a special group of people who are generally deprived and prone to develop psychiatric disorder even if reared in a well-run institution. Objective. To assess the prevalence and associated factors of depression among orphan adolescents living in Addis Ababa orphan centers, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016 among 453 orphan adolescents in Ethiopia. All orphan adolescents who were living in the selected orphan centers were included in the study. The data was collected by interviewing the orphan adolescents at the orphan center by using a structured questionnaire. Kocher adolescent depression scale and MSPSS scale were used to measure orphan level of depression and their perceived social support. After appropriate coding, the collected data had been entered into EPI info version 7 and it was exported to SPSS version 20 for further analysis. The OR with 95% CI was used to measure association and p value < 0.05 was used as statistically significant value in multivariable binary logistic regressions. Result. The overall prevalence of depression among the orphan adolescents was found to be 36.4%. The majority of the respondents, 302 (66.7%), were within the age range of 15-19 years. Perceived social support (OR 5.86; 95% CI 3.47, 9.91), community discrimination (OR 2.68; 95% CI 1.58, 4.56), length of stay (OR 1.90; 95% CI 1.08, 3.35), age of entrance (OR 2.21; 95% CI 1.32, 3.69), and presence of visitors (OR 3.62; 95% CI 2.06, 6.37) were the main variables associated with depression. Conclusion. The prevalence of depression among orphan adolescents was found to be high. Low level of social support, higher length of stay, community discrimination, the presence of visitors, and younger age of entrance were statistically significant variables to develop depression.

The study aimed at examining the relationships among family environment, depression and self-concept of adolescents in Hong Kong. A multi-domain perspective was adopted. The study involved a total of 2706 adolescents. Subjects were group administered a questionnaire containing the multi-domain Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981), the multi dimensional depression scale – Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (Reynolds, 1987) and the Multi-domain Multi-Perspective Self-Concept Inventory (Cheung & Lau, 1996). Results showed that all the three domains of family environment (relationship, personal growth, and system maintenance) correlated significantly with the three depression aspects (emotionality, lack of positive experience, and physiological irritation). The relationship domain of FES appeared to correlate more strongly than the other two domains with the depression aspects. The FES domains also correlated strongly and positively with the four domains of self-concept: academic, appearance, social, and general. Both the relationship domain and system maintenance domain correlated more strongly than the personal growth domain with the self-concept domains. Regression analyses showed that family relationship was most predictive of various aspects of depression and self-concept. Sex difference was found in the prediction of both boys' and girls' depression and self-concept. With boys, system maintenance was predictive only of self-concept. With girls, personal growth was predictive of depression, and personal growth and system maintenance were predictive of self-concept. Analysis of variance showed that students high on family relationship, personal growth, and system maintenance were low in different depression aspects, but high in various self-concept domains. It was concluded that a cohesive, orderly, and achieving family environment is conducive to more positive development in adolescents, in terms of lower depression and higher self-concept.
