Three InAsSbBi samples are grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 400 °C on GaSb substrates with three different offcuts: (100) on-axis, (100) offcut 1° toward [011], and (100) offcut 4° toward [011]. The samples are investigated using X-ray diffraction, Nomarski optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The InAsSbBi layers are 210 nm thick, coherently strained, and show no observable defects. The substrate offcut is not observed to influence the structural and interface quality of the samples. Each sample exhibits small lateral variations in the Bi mole fraction, with the largest variation observed in the on-axis growth. Bismuth rich surface droplet features are observed on all samples. The surface droplets are isotropic on the on-axis sample and elongated along the [011¯] step edges on the 1° and 4° offcut samples. No significant change in optical quality with offcut angle is observed.

The audiofrequency magnetotelluric (AMT) method has been used to study permafrost thickness near Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T. in the Mackenzie Delta. In the frequency range of 10 Hz–10 kHz the permafrost behaves as a simple resistive layer over a conductive layer. This simple two-layer model can be inverted by asymptotic models to give a unique value for the thickness of the highly resistive frozen layer. In areas of simple layering, these results correlate well with drilling. In areas of sharp lateral variations in resistivity, depths tend to be underestimated. Unlike other electrical methods, AMT is not hampered by the presence of a surface melt layer in the summer if the conductivity–thickness product of this 'active layer' is less than about 0.03 mho (0.03 S).

Just as synthetic seismic data can be created by expressing the wave field radiating from a seismic source as a set of Gaussian beams, recorded data can be downward continued by expressing the recorded wave field as a set of Gaussian beams emerging at the earth’s surface. In both cases, the Gaussian beam description of the seismic‐wave propagation can be advantageous when there are lateral variations in the seismic velocities. Gaussian‐beam downward continuation enables wave‐equation calculation of seismic propagation, while it retains the interpretive raypath description of this propagation. This paper describes a zero‐offset depth migration method that employs Gaussian beam downward continuation of the recorded wave field. The Gaussian‐beam migration method has advantages for imaging complex structures. Like finite‐difference migration, it is especially compatible with lateral variations in velocity, but Gaussian beam migration can image steeply dipping reflectors and will not produce unwanted reflections from structure in the velocity model. Unlike other raypath methods, Gaussian beam migration has guaranteed regular behavior at caustics and shadows. In addition, the method determines the beam spacing that ensures efficient, accurate calculations. The images produced by Gaussian beam migration are usually stable with respect to changes in beam parameters.

Convection in the metallic cores of terrestrial planets is likely to be subjected to lateral variations in heat flux through the outer boundary imposed by creeping flow in the overlying silicate mantles. Boundary anomalies can significantly influence global diagnostics of core convection when the Rayleigh number, $Ra$, is weakly supercritical; however, little is known about the strongly supercritical regime appropriate for planets. We perform numerical simulations of rapidly rotating convection in a spherical shell geometry and impose two patterns of boundary heat flow heterogeneity: a hemispherical $Y_{1}^{1}$ spherical harmonic pattern; and one derived from seismic tomography of the Earth’s lower mantle. We consider Ekman numbers $10^{-4}\leqslant E\leqslant 10^{-6}$, flux-based Rayleigh numbers up to ${\sim}800$ times critical, and a Prandtl number of unity. The amplitude of the lateral variation in heat flux is characterised by $q_{L}^{\ast }=0$, 2.3, 5.0, the peak-to-peak amplitude of the outer boundary heat flux divided by its mean. We find that the Nusselt number, $Nu$, can be increased by up to ${\sim}25\,\%$ relative to the equivalent homogeneous case due to boundary-induced correlations between the radial velocity and temperature anomalies near the top of the shell. The $Nu$ enhancement tends to become greater as the amplitude and length scale of the boundary heterogeneity are increased and as the system becomes more supercritical. This $Ra$ dependence can steepen the $Nu\propto Ra^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}}$ scaling in the rotationally dominated regime, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ for our most extreme case approximately 20 % greater than the equivalent homogeneous scaling. Therefore, it may be important to consider boundary heterogeneity when extrapolating numerical results to planetary conditions.
