Abstract. The ocean response to carbon emissions involves a competition between the increase in atmospheric CO2 acting to enhance the ocean carbon storage, characterised by the carbon-concentration feedback, and climate change acting to decrease the ocean carbon storage, characterised by the carbon-climate feedback. The contribution from different ocean basins to the carbon cycle feedbacks and its control by the ocean carbonate chemistry, physical ventilation and biological processes is explored in diagnostics of 10 CMIP6 Earth system models. To gain mechanist insight, the dependence of these feedbacks to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is also investigated in an idealised climate model and the CMIP6 models. The Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans contribute equally to the carbon-concentration feedback, despite their different size. This large contribution from the Atlantic Ocean relative to its size is associated with an enhanced carbon storage in the ocean interior due to a strong local physical ventilation and an influx of carbon transported from the Southern Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean provides the largest contribution to the carbon-climate feedback relative to its size, which is primarily due to climate change acting to reduce the physical ventilation. The Southern Ocean provides a relatively small contribution to the carbon-climate feedback, due to a compensation between the climate effects of the combined decrease in solubility and physical ventilation, and the increase in accumulation of regenerated carbon in the ocean interior. In the Atlantic Ocean, the AMOC strength and its weakening with warming has a strong control on the carbon cycle feedbacks that leads to a moderate dependence of these feedbacks to AMOC on global scale. In the Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans there is no clear correlation between AMOC and the carbon cycle feedbacks, suggesting that other processes control the ocean ventilation and carbon storage there.

Abstract. This ocean response can be characterised in terms of a carbon–concentration feedback and a carbon–climate feedback. The contribution from different ocean basins to these feedbacks on centennial timescales is explored using diagnostics of ocean carbonate chemistry, physical ventilation and biological processes in 11 CMIP6 Earth system models. To gain mechanistic insight, the dependence of these feedbacks on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is also investigated in an idealised climate model and the CMIP6 models. For the carbon–concentration feedback, the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern oceans provide comparable contributions when estimated in terms of the volume-integrated carbon storage. This large contribution from the Atlantic Ocean relative to its size is due to strong local physical ventilation and an influx of carbon transported from the Southern Ocean. The Southern Ocean has large anthropogenic carbon uptake from the atmosphere, but its contribution to the carbon storage is relatively small due to large carbon transport to the other basins. For the carbon–climate feedback estimated in terms of carbon storage, the Atlantic and Arctic oceans provide the largest contributions relative to their size. In the Atlantic, this large contribution is primarily due to climate change acting to reduce the physical ventilation. In the Arctic, this large contribution is associated with a large warming per unit volume. The Southern Ocean provides a relatively small contribution to the carbon–climate feedback, due to competition between the climate effects of a decrease in solubility and physical ventilation and an increase in accumulation of regenerated carbon. The more poorly ventilated Indo-Pacific Ocean provides a small contribution to the carbon cycle feedbacks relative to its size. In the Atlantic Ocean, the carbon cycle feedbacks strongly depend on the AMOC strength and its weakening with warming. In the Arctic, there is a moderate correlation between the AMOC weakening and the carbon–climate feedback that is related to changes in carbonate chemistry. In the Pacific, Indian and Southern oceans, there is no clear correlation between the AMOC and the carbon cycle feedbacks, suggesting that other processes control the ocean ventilation and carbon storage there.

<p>Perhaps the most important feedback to orbital climate change is CO<sub>2</sub> storage in the deep ocean.  By regulating atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub>, ocean carbon storage synchronizes glacial climate in both hemispheres, and drives the full magnitude of glacial-interglacial climate change.  However few data exist that directly track the deep ocean’s carbon chemistry over a glacial cycle.  Here, we present geochemical reconstructions of deep ocean circulation, redox, and carbon chemistry from sediment cores making up a detailed depth profile in the South Atlantic, alongside a record of Southern Ocean surface water CO<sub>2</sub>, spanning the last glacial cycle.  These data indicate that initial glacial CO<sub>2</sub> drawdown is associated with a major increase in surface ocean pH in the Antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean, cooling at depth, enhanced deep ocean stratification, and carbon storage.  Deep ocean carbon storage and deep stratification are further enhanced when CO<sub>2</sub> falls at the onset of Marine Isotope Stage 4, and are also pronounced during the LGM, illustrating a link between orbital scale climate stages and deep ocean carbon.  However our data also illustrate non-linear feedbacks to orbital forcing during glacial terminations, which show abrupt decreases in pH in Southern Ocean surface and subsurface waters, as CO<sub>2</sub> is rapidly expelled from the deep ocean at the end of the last ice age.</p>

<p>The Southern Ocean plays an important role in the uptake, transport and storage of carbon by the global oceans. These properties are dominated by the response to the rise in anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> in the atmosphere, but they are modulated by climate variability and climate change. Here we explore the effect of climate variability and climate change on ocean carbon uptake and storage in the Southern Ocean. We assess the extent to which climate change may be distinguishable from the anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> signal and from the natural background variability. We use a combination of biogeochemical ocean modelling and observations from the GLODAPv2020 database to detect climate fingerprints in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC).</p><p>We conduct an ensemble of hindcast model simulations of the period 1920-2019, using a global ocean biogeochemical model which incorporates plankton ecosystem dynamics based on twelve plankton functional types. We use the model ensemble to isolate the changes in DIC due to rising anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> alone and the changes due to climatic drivers (both climate variability and climate change), to determine their relative roles in the emerging total DIC trends and patterns. We analyse these DIC trends for a climate fingerprint over the past four decades, across spatial scales from the Southern Ocean, to basin level and down to regional ship transects. Highly sampled ship transects were extracted from GLODAPv2020 to obtain locations with the maximum spatiotemporal coverage, to reduce the inherent biases in patchy observational data. Model results were sampled to the ship transects to compare the climate fingerprints directly to the observational data.</p><p>Model results show a substantial change in DIC over a 35-year period, with a range of more than +/- 30 µmol/L. In the surface ocean, both anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> and climatic drivers act to increase DIC concentration, with the influence of anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> dominating at lower latitudes and the influence of climatic drivers dominating at higher latitudes. In the deep ocean, the anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> generally acts to increase DIC except in the subsurface waters at lower latitudes, while climatic drivers act to decrease DIC concentration. The combined fingerprint of anthropogenic CO<sub>2</sub> and climatic drivers on DIC concentration is for an increasing trend at the surface and decreasing trends in low latitude subsurface waters. Preliminary comparison of the model fingerprints to observational ship transects will also be presented.</p>

Abstract. We present a compilation of 127 time series δ13C records from Cibicides wuellerstorfi spanning the last deglaciation (20–6 ka) which is well-suited for reconstructing large-scale carbon cycle changes, especially for comparison with isotope-enabled carbon cycle models. The age models for the δ13C records are derived from regional planktic radiocarbon compilations (Stern and Lisiecki, 2014). The δ13C records were stacked in nine different regions and then combined using volume-weighted averages to create intermediate, deep, and global δ13C stacks. These benthic δ13C stacks are used to reconstruct changes in the size of the terrestrial biosphere and deep ocean carbon storage. The timing of change in global mean δ13C is interpreted to indicate terrestrial biosphere expansion from 19–6 ka. The δ13C gradient between the intermediate and deep ocean, which we interpret as a proxy for deep ocean carbon storage, matches the pattern of atmospheric CO2 change observed in ice core records. The presence of signals associated with the terrestrial biosphere and atmospheric CO2 indicates that the compiled δ13C records have sufficient spatial coverage and time resolution to accurately reconstruct large-scale carbon cycle changes during the glacial termination.

AbstractAnthropogenic CO2 emission-induced feedbacks between the carbon cycle and the climate system perturb the efficiency of atmospheric CO2 uptake by land and ocean carbon reservoirs. The Southern Ocean is a region where these feedbacks can be largest and differ most among Earth System Model projections of 21st century climate change. To improve our mechanistic understanding of these feedbacks, we develop an automated procedure that tracks changes in the positions of Southern Ocean water masses and their carbon uptake. In an idealised ensemble of climate change projections, we diagnose two carbon–concentration feedbacks driven by atmospheric CO2 (due to increasing air-sea CO2 partial pressure difference, dpCO2, and reducing carbonate buffering capacity) and two carbon–climate feedbacks driven by climate change (due to changes in the water mass surface outcrop areas and local climate impacts). Collectively these feedbacks increase the CO2 uptake by the Southern Ocean and account for one-fifth of the global uptake of CO2 emissions. The increase in CO2 uptake is primarily dpCO2-driven, with Antarctic intermediate waters making the largest contribution; the remaining three feedbacks partially offset this increase (by ~25%), with maximum reductions in Subantarctic mode waters. The process dominating the decrease in CO2 uptake is water mass-dependent: reduction in carbonate buffering capacity in Subtropical and Subantarctic mode waters, local climate impacts in Antarctic intermediate waters, and reduction in outcrop areas in circumpolar deep waters and Antarctic bottom waters. Intermodel variability in the feedbacks is predominately dpCO2–driven and should be a focus of efforts to constrain projection uncertainty.

Abstract. During the four most recent glacial cycles, atmospheric CO2 during glacial maxima has been lowered by about 90–100 ppm with respect to interglacials. There is widespread consensus that most of this carbon was partitioned in the ocean. It is however still debated which processes were dominant in achieving this increased carbon storage. In this paper, we use an Earth system model of intermediate complexity to constrain the range in ocean carbon storage for an ensemble of ocean circulation equilibrium states. We do a set of simulations where we run the model to pre-industrial equilibrium, but where we achieve different ocean circulation by changing forcing parameters such as wind stress, ocean diffusivity and atmospheric heat diffusivity. As a consequence, the ensemble members also have different ocean carbon reservoirs, global ocean average temperatures, biological pump efficiencies and conditions for air-sea CO2 disequilibrium. We analyse changes in total ocean carbon storage and separate it into contributions by the solubility pump, the biological pump and the CO2 disequilibrium component. We also relate these contributions to differences in strength of ocean overturning circulation. In cases with weaker circulation, we see that the ocean's capacity for carbon storage is larger. Depending on which ocean forcing parameter that is tuned, the origin of the change in carbon storage is different. When wind stress or ocean vertical diffusivity is changed, the response of the biological pump gives the most important effect on ocean carbon storage, whereas when atmospheric heat diffusivity or ocean horizontal diffusivity is changed, the solubility pump and the disequilibrium component are also important and sometimes dominant. Finally, we do a drawdown experiment, where we investigate the capacity for increased carbon storage by maximising the efficiency of the biological pump in our ensemble members. We conclude that different initial states for an ocean model result in different capacities for ocean carbon storage, due to differences in the ocean circulation state. This could explain why it is difficult to achieve comparable responses of the ocean carbon pumps in model intercomparison studies, where the initial states vary between models. The drawdown experiment highlights the importance of the strength of the biological pump in the control state for model studies of increased biological efficiency.

Abstract. Given the magnitude and dynamism of the deep marine carbon reservoir, it is almost certain that past glacial – interglacial fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 have relied at least in part on changes in the carbon storage capacity of the deep sea. To date, physical ocean circulation mechanisms that have been proposed as viable explanations for glacial – interglacial CO2 change have focussed almost exclusively on dynamical or kinetic processes. Here, a simple mechanism is proposed for increasing the carbon storage capacity of the deep sea that operates via changes in the volume of southern-sourced deep-water filling the ocean basins, as dictated by the hypsometry of the ocean floor. It is proposed that a water-mass that occupies more than the bottom 3 km of the ocean will essentially determine the carbon content of the marine reservoir. Hence by filling this interval with southern-sourced deep-water (enriched in dissolved CO2 due to its particular mode of formation) the amount of carbon sequestered in the deep sea may be greatly increased. A simple box-model is used to test this hypothesis, and to investigate its implications. It is suggested that up to 70% of the observed glacial – interglacial CO2 change might be explained by the replacement of northern-sourced deep-water below 2.5 km water depth by its southern counterpart. Most importantly, it is found that an increase in the volume of southern-sourced deep-water allows glacial CO2 levels to be simulated easily with only modest changes in Southern Ocean biological export or overturning. If incorporated into the list of contributing factors to marine carbon sequestration, this mechanism may help to significantly reduce the "deficit" of explained glacial – interglacial CO2 change.

&lt;p&gt;As the climate warms due to greenhouse gas emissions, the ocean absorbs excess heat and carbon. The patterns of ocean excess heat and carbon storage appear tightly linked when the large-scale circulation is fixed. This unique link is not shared with any other ocean tracer, such as &lt;span&gt;Chlorofluorocarbons&lt;/span&gt; (CFCs). At the same time, ocean excess carbon storage patterns are mostly unchanged whether the large-scale circulation is free to evolve, or fixed to the pre-industrial circulation pattern, as the climate warms. Here, we interpret the reason for this behavior by breaking ocean carbon storage into two parts: uptake of atmospheric anomalies by the surface ocean, and subsequent internal storage by the ocean&amp;#8217;s circulation. We show that the patterns of surface ocean carbon anomalies are dictated by mean state biogeochemical properties and therefore mostly unchanged by circulation changes. Furthermore, surface biogeochemical properties are strongly shaped by the ocean temperature, providing a link between ocean heat and carbon uptake. CFCs on the hand, lack chemical buffering and therefore the patterns of CFC storage do not correlate with heat as much as carbon patterns do. The patterns of surface anomalies ultimately explain most of the differences in how temperature, carbon and CFCs are stored by the ocean, while changes in internal pathways are of secondary importance. Furthermore, the ratio of total ocean carbon and heat storage is roughly constant across warming scenarios and climate models, which might have further implications for relating ocean carbon storage to important climate metrics, such as the transient response to cumulative emissions.&lt;/p&gt;
