One of the most promising methods of research in solar–terrestrial physics is the comparison of the responses of the magnetosphere–ionosphere–atmosphere system to various types of interplanetary disturbances (so-called “interplanetary drivers”). Numerous studies have shown that different types of drivers result in different reactions of the system for identical variations in the interplanetary magnetic field. In particular, the sheaths—compression regions before fast interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs)—have higher efficiency in terms of the generation of magnetic storms than ICMEs. The growing popularity of this method of research is accompanied by the growth of incorrect methodological approaches in such studies. These errors can be divided into four main classes: (i) using incorrect data with the identification of driver types published in other studies; (ii) using incorrect methods to identify the types of drivers and, as a result, misclassify the causes of magnetospheric-ionospheric disturbances; (iii) ignoring a frequent case with a complex, composite, nature of the driver (the presence of a sequence of several simple drivers) and matching the system response with only one of the drivers; for example, a magnetic storm is often generated by a sheath in front of ICME, although the authors consider these events to be a so-called “CME-induced” storm, rather than a “sheath-induced” storm; (iv) ignoring the compression regions before the fast CME in the case when there is no interplanetary shock (IS) in front of the compression region (“sheath without IS” or the so-called “lost driver”), although this type of driver generates about 10% of moderate and large magnetic storms. Possible ways of solving this problem are discussed.

AbstractIn gradual Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events, shock waves driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) play a major role in accelerating particles, and the energetic particle flux enhances substantially when the shock front passes by the observer. Such enhancements are historically referred to as Energetic Storm Particle (ESP) events, but it remains unclear why ESP time profiles vary significantly from event to event. In some cases, energetic protons are not even clearly associated with shocks. Here, we report an unusual, short-duration proton event detected on 5 June 2011 in the compressed sheath region bounded by an interplanetary shock and the leading edge of the interplanetary CME (or ICME) that was driving the shock. While < 10 MeV protons were detected already at the shock front, the higher-energy (> 30 MeV) protons were detected about four hours after the shock arrival, apparently correlated with a turbulent magnetic cavity embedded in the ICME sheath region.

A new design method for trajectory shaping guidance laws with the impact angle constraint is proposed in this study. The basic idea is that the multiplier introduced to combine the equations for the terminal constraints is used to shape a flight trajectory as desired. To this end, the general form of impact angle control guidance (IACG) is first derived as a function of an arbitrary constraint-combining multiplier using the optimal control. We reveal that the constraint-combining multiplier satisfying the kinematics can be expressed as a function of state variables. From this result, the constraint-combining multiplier to achieve a desired trajectory can be obtained. Accordingly, when the desired trajectory is designed to satisfy the terminal constraints, the proposed method directly can provide a closed form of IACG laws that can achieve the desired trajectory. The potential significance of the proposed result is that various trajectory shaping IACG laws that can cope with various guidance goals can be readily determined compared to existing approaches. In this study, several examples are shown to validate the proposed method. The results also indicate that previous IACG laws belong to the subset of the proposed result. Finally, the characteristics of the proposed guidance laws are analyzed through numerical simulations.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we present results from a multistage numerical campaign to begin to explain and determine why extreme debris disc detections are rare, what types of impacts will result in extreme debris discs and what we can learn about the parameters of the collision from the extreme debris discs. We begin by simulating many giant impacts using a smoothed particle hydrodynamical code with tabulated equations of state and track the escaping vapour from the collision. Using an N-body code, we simulate the spatial evolution of the vapour generated dust post-impact. We show that impacts release vapour anisotropically not isotropically as has been assumed previously and that the distribution of the resulting generated dust is dependent on the mass ratio and impact angle of the collision. In addition, we show that the anisotropic distribution of post-collision dust can cause the formation or lack of formation of the short-term variation in flux depending on the orientation of the collision with respect to the orbit around the central star. Finally, our results suggest that there is a narrow region of semimajor axis where a vapour generated disc would be observable for any significant amount of time implying that giant impacts where most of the escaping mass is in vapour would not be observed often but this does not mean that the collisions are not occurring.

AbstractThis study elucidates the performance of cold-sprayed tungsten carbide-nickel coating against solid particle impingement erosion using alumina (corundum) particles. After the coating fabrication, part of the specimens followed two different annealing heat treatment cycles with peak temperatures of 600 °C and 800 °C. The coatings were examined in terms of microstructure in the as-sprayed (AS) and the two heat-treated conditions (HT1, HT2). Subsequently, the erosion tests were carried out using design of experiments with two control factors and two replicate measurements in each case. The effect of the heat treatment on the mass loss of the coatings was investigated at the three levels (AS, HT1, HT2), as well as the impact angle of the erodents (30°, 60°, 90°). Finally, the response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to analyze and optimize the results, building the mathematical models that relate the significant variables and their interactions to the output response (mass loss) for each coating condition. The obtained results demonstrated that erosion minimization was achieved when the coating was heat treated at 600 °C and the angle was 90°.
