Abstract The lower Tertiary Beaulieu basaltic volcano near Rognes in southern France had two episodes of activity, emitting pre-Stampian (pre-middle Oligocene) olivine basalt with lherzolite nodules, and a terminal upper Stampian (terminal middle Oligocene) dolerite flow with a pegmatoid facies. An upper Stampian conglomerate including volcanic fragments and also lenticular limestones lies between the flows. Terminal upper Stampian marl and limestone overlie the dolerite. The volcanic conduit probably lies at the intersection of a cross fault with one of the major northwest-trending faults characterizing the region.
