This paper outlines a framework for applying a genetic algorithm to the selection of component variants between the conceptual and detailed design stages of product development. A genetic algorithm (GA) is defined for the problem and an example is presented that demonstrates its application and usefulness. Functional modeling techniques are used to formulate the design problem and generate the chromosomes that are evaluated with the algorithm. In the presented example, suitable GA parameters and the break-even point where the GA surpassed an enumerated search of the same solution space were found. Recommend uses of the GA along with limitations of the method and future work are presented as well.

Function is an important aspect of artifacts in engineering design. Although many definitions of function have been proposed in the extensive research mainly in engineering design and philosophy, the relationship among them remains unclear. Aiming at a contribution to this problem, this paper investigates some ontological issues based on the role concept in ontological engineering. We discuss some ontological distinctions of function such as essentiality and actuality and then propose some fundamental kinds of function such as essential function and capacity function. Based on them, we categorize some existing definitions in the literature and clarify the relationship among them. Then, a model of function in a product life-cycle is proposed. It represents the changes of existence of the individuals of each kind of function, which are caused by designing, manufacturing and use. That model enables us to give answers to some ontological questions such as when and where a function exists and what a function depends on. The consideration on these issues provides engineers with some differentiated viewpoints for capturing functions and thus contributes to consistent functional modeling from a specific viewpoint. The clarified relationships among the kinds of function including the existing definitions in the literature will contribute to interoperability among functional models based on the different kinds and/or definitions.

Image functional modeling (IFM) has been introduced as a method to simultaneously synthesize imaging and mechanical data with computational models to determine the degree and location of airway constriction in asthma. Using lung imaging provided by hyperpolarized 3He MRI, we advanced our IFM method to require matching not only to ventilation defect location but to specific ventilation throughout the lung. Imaging and mechanical data were acquired for four healthy and four asthmatic subjects pre- and postbronchial challenge. After provocation, we first identified maximum-size airways leading exclusively to ventilation defects and highly constricted them. Constriction patterns were then found for the remaining airways to match mechanical data. Ventilation images were predicted for each pattern, and visual and statistical comparisons were done with measured data. Results showed that matching of ventilation defects requires severe constriction of small airways. The mean constriction of such airways leading to the ventilation defects needed to be 70–80% rather than fully closed. Also, central airway constriction alone could not account for dysfunction seen in asthma, so small airways must be involved.
